Well Snaga is roughly synonymous with Seneschal.
Of course I believe that naming this position at all before we have some sort of definition of who we are, is difficult at best.

jnyusa--

hey, prim was right!

all--

Seneschal and castellan are too feudal norman french for Tolkien. :D Collectively the closest Old English would be the Witangemot...individually, apart from thegn (the Anglo-Saxon spelling variant), options would be ealdorman or eorl...both of which are landed titles, if it matters to people; runwita, sort of a counselor; raedbora, similar; hyrde, more guardian or keeper, plural hyrð.

Myself I like the idea of keeping Master and Thegn for Mayor alternates/deputies/whatevers. How about Rangers, in its "original" sense?

See? Middle French! Sure, they stole it from the Germans, but then they ruined it! :D

edit to add rumination: besides, I would have SCA flashbacks... :Q

I like Rangers!

And I like Thegn for the Depute Mayor, but I still like Mayor for the Mayor.

Seriously, words are everything. I see a lot more people wanting to enter the Ranger Pool than wanting to enter the Administrator Pool.

Rangerd00dz and Rangerbabez

I like Rangers, too. Though I'm not too sure about Ranger Babez—Jn and her wild ideas again. . . .

I've always wondered about Tolkien's use of "ranger".

"Ranger's" first usage was in the 13th century as woodsman, gamekeeper, or forester. This usage still remains within the US Forestry Service and similar state units.

From 1622, the English militarized colonial woodsmen and formally called them rangers (Roger's Rangers) for use against the French and Indians in America. From that point it had a mixed military/paramilitary usage. They were used in the Revolution, as scouts in the Mexican War, and the Civil War.

In Texas, they were law enforcement officers (State Police) from 1830 which created an association with a horse mounted enforcer of the law.

In the US army, rangers were used in WWII for jobs usually associated with English commandos (Darby's Rangers). The US Rangers were reformed in 1950 for use in Korea.

Tolkien would have known of the usage up to this point.

Viet Nam saw the first use of Long Range Patrols (LRPs, pronounced lerps). These are the guys you drop into an area the enemy owns and they live off of the land for months. In Apocalypse Now, Sheen's character was a LRP and Brando's may have been.

They were reformed again in 1974, with the same general purpose.

So, I remain puzzled by Tolkien's use of the word. Was he a secret fan of the Lone Ranger? Did he long for the action of Darby's Ranger as opposed to the static trench warfare he endured. I can't see a connection to its original meaning.

Since Tolkien's use, ranger has appeared in several other fantasy books.

This is the only thing that's going to come to my mind if the name Ranger is chosen. My mind automatically fills in 'Texas' Ranger.

The Texas Rangers was a TV program when I was a kid. Loved it.

The theme song as, "The eyes of Texas are upon you,"
sung to the tune of "I've been working on the railroad." In those days these knew how to do beefcake. Today all the beef is on steroids.

Re Tolkien's Rangers, that was the name others gave them, was it not? If they were renowned for their woodcraftiness, 'Ranger' would make sense.
