Ang - one of the things that emerged early in our discussion was the fact that b77 doesn't have a mission, per se. So there cannot by definition be a mission statement, per se.

If we ever re-do the mission statement, we will certainly start with a discussion of what our mission should be. Considering the amount of disagreement about this at the present time, it was not expedient to postpone opening the board until we sorted it out.

Also, it might be impossible for us to formulate a proper mission when such a large change is looming before us. Doubtless our perception of our mission will change when we see what kind of new members we attract and how the board evolves during the first months after opening.

Hi, Voronwe. I really miss all you guys on the committee -- I wish I could have kept up. Thank you for your kind words and for persevering to the end.

I don't get too caught up in the fact that we call it a Mission Statement
Especially since we aren't labelling it a Mission Statement where it appears (isn't that right?)

Right. :)

(In the Charter it says, "Our Mission," but front page, etc. do not.)

damn I wish I'd had more time during the discussion...

I also disagree with that idea, Jny. Maybe this is too philosophical, but I think that every organization has a mission, whether it's members are consciously aware of it or not. We all come here for a reason, and we exist as a community for a reason. Bringing that reason up to the level of conscious awareness is a valuable exercise.

I don't think we should ask what our mission should be, we should try to figure out what our mission already is. My wife calls it our "superordinate goal", but she's got a degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, so she's required to use polysyllabic words. I think it's a law or something. But anyways, we gather for a reason. Figuring out what that is and distilling it down to its most diluted form would certainly be a real barrel of fishhooks, and now probably isn't the best time. But I'd still like to try sometime later.

I'm sure that's so, Ang. I agree with you. But I'm a pragmatist. We had one week to complete this task and plombing the souls of 130 people was not in the picture.

But I'd still like to try sometime later.

I'm sure that we will.

Ang, I'm unclear at what idea of Jn's you are disagreeing with here. Is it putting the statement on the Front Page (without calling it a Mission Statement) or including it in the charger as "our Mission"?

:doh1: a n00bie mistake :doh1:

I didn't quote Jny and by the time I got done typing my reply, there were four posts between my reply and the post I was replying to. I was actually disagreeing with this:

Can I be - for the last time - a pain in the backside and ask...

[Note: A very small change in the wording involving moving the word "gather" from before "from around the world" to after that phrase was made in the course of the discussion.]
....just what the exact wording of this is going to be. I need to know and so does TLE.

The wording is as it is in the first post:

Board77 is a democratically governed internet community where members from around the world gather to cultivate friendships and engage in discussion. Our conversations cover any topic of interest to our members, from current events and philosophy to fine arts and the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. We aspire to maintain a culture of respect, equality and openness.
