Pursuant to this thread I am putting up polls in each forum other then ToE, the Outside forums, and the Board Administration forums (and the Invite forum, of course) regarding whether non-members should be able read that particular forum when we open. There was extensive discussion in that thread regarding which forums, if any, should be readable by non-members, so you may wish to check it out if you like.

Needless to say, feel free to share whatever thoughts you have about having this particular forum readable by non-members here. Voting will remain open for ten days.

What would be the point of making this one readable?

I wondered that too Faramond. :) My first instinct was to say, no, we don't need this readable, it's just dull business and non-members can't get involved anyway - but then I had another thought:

We tout ourselves as a democratic board; business is democracy in action. I don't think it would do any harm for non-members to read this (ie no personal stuff is in here) but it may do alot of good too, in terms of demonstrating our transparency.

Haven't voted yet. Am interested in hearing feedback to this idea. I'm persuadable. :)

Just at the moment this forum looks pretty terrifying, in my opinion. :P

I mean, we know what all these threads are for and why they're here and why they're important—but someone wandering in from outside might think we were nuts.

This is the only forum that I voted against having be viewable. I voted in favor of all the other ones accept for There and Back Again, which I am not going to vote on since I don't feel I should decide how publicly viewable other people's creative collaborations should be. But I think that this forum is for member business, which is none of the business of non-members.

I voted against readable, too, a while ago. Same reasons as Voronwe. Business is business and it's no one's but our own.

If anyone signs up because they're dying to see what's in the Business Room, they've probably found their new home.

I am the lone yes voter.
I voted yes for the same reasons I like having Congress on CSPAN.
I have nothing to hide and I don't care what anyone else thinks.

Oh, like there's an outside chance that we're not?

I'm swaying.

At first I was solidly in the "none of their beeswax" camp.

But then I started thinking about what Holby and Imp are saying... there is no personal information here, only democracy in its often rather dry creation, and I am characterized by a belief in fewer restrictions on information, in general, unless there is good reason for them.

Still thinkin'.

Haven't made up my mind on this one yet. :)

I voted for opening all of the forums, including this one. A "closed" forum is a false sense of security, to me.

Holby,

Since I haven't noticed an improvement in Congress due to C-SPAN, that makes me think we're better off closing it. Closing down Congress doesn't sound like a bad idea either, but I'll take that to the Symposium. :D

Idylle, closing down or shutting up?
I'm also undecided but leaning towards readability. The only reason I see for making a forum non-readable is to protect our privacy from casual sharks and searchbots. There's none of that here.

I agree with both Prim and Hobby. They will think we are nuts and they will be right.

Seriously, I do think that the self-government aspect of the board is what sets it apart, for better or for worse. This is the only board I can think of where our happy gabbing is interrupted by calls to vote on chapters and missions, jury duty, admin duty, and so on. I think we need to be very up front about it, because IMO we want to attract people who will participate in the self-government and be comfortable with the responsibilities it entails.

I'm going to wait a bit and see if anyone makes a compelling argument against opening this forum.

I can understand why some of you say it's 'our business'.. but then again I'm all for transparency. I bet it would, as Holby says, just be like CSPAN... people will have a look.... go

:Q

and then either yawn and flip 'channels' ;) or read with rapt attention
:Q :Q

Either way, only registered members will be able to post and I'm sure we'll keep 'em in line

I haven't quite made up my mind regarding this forum yet. At first, I was against making it viewable - but, on the other hand, there's nothing personal here, and this is probably the driest of the non-admin forums...

Got to think over the night. :scratch

I am undecided about this forum. I voted for the other forums on the basis of giving passers-by a taster only (ie Made in Dale and Dicisne) If everything can be seen at once it will enourage lazy lurking at the expense of participation. There has to be a feel that if you join there will be extra goodies on offer. Whether this forum is a goodie I wouldn't care to say. :D It could be argued either way.

OOooo... what a wonderful point.

TORC was my only other messageboard, so I have no vast storehouse of experience about such things, but I would bet that a self-governing board where there is some expectation of personal involvement may be a bit unusual.

They might want to see this stuff, before they jump on in.

I'm swaying towards readability....
