Pursuant to this thread I am putting up polls in each forum other then ToE, the Outside forums, and the Board Administration forums (and the Invite forum, of course) regarding whether non-members should be able read that particular forum when we open. There was extensive discussion in that thread regarding which forums, if any, should be readable by non-members, so you may wish to check it out if you like.

Needless to say, feel free to share whatever thoughts you have about having this particular forum readable by non-members here. Voting will remain open for ten days.

What, nobody here? I'm going to vote no, I think. There's a lot of personal information here, locations, photos. I don't think it should be casually available.

But it is casually available, as soon as someone signs up. To think otherwise is to foster a false sense of security. You might want to look thru old threads now and remove anything you don't want a perfect stranger to read.

Except much of it is actually in your posts. ;)

I'm more concerned about search engines than casual surfers. Anybody typing Frelga into Google will learn quite a bit about me as it is. I would prefer that my favorite lunch spots were not included into search results.

I say no too, there is a lot of info about where we meet, how to spot us etc.

I just think it could be misused. I know it probably will be when we open up anyway, but there is something reasuring in knowing that the only people who can read this stuff are signed up to read it.

It will stop the casual surfers, people who look around on search engines, but who don't sign up for everything.

I vote no.

I've voted no too. Can't be too careful these days.

Yes, considering all the directions and personal info like that, I don't think non-members should be able to read this forum. If they'd like to join us, sign right up, of course, but otherwise there's no need for them to know what's going on here.

I voted no too and considering the way this poll seems to be going I think this sub-forum will have to move into another category.... when we're finished with the poll of course ... and lots of other things ;)

The poll is done, the outcome is "no," and as Alandriel has suggested, it might make sense to move this subforum to Roundtable so that there aren't any subforums in Welcome that can't be read by nonmembers.

Does anyone have any objections to doing this?

I think it would fit perfectly right beneath "Made in Dale" - sort of similar topic, as the geekery addressed in the title here is about collecting, too. :)

(And it would be like exchanging "invites" for "moots", which kind of has a nice touch, I think.)

I'll wait until tomorrow morning for objections and then move this subforum to where Invites is now. That way the three "private" forums come last. Remember, Invites will be gone.
