Pursuant to this thread I am putting up polls in each forum other then ToE, the Outside forums, and the Board Administration forums (and the Invite forum, of course) regarding whether non-members should be able read that particular forum when we open. There was extensive discussion in that thread regarding which forums, if any, should be readable by non-members, so you may wish to check it out if you like.

Needless to say, feel free to share whatever thoughts you have about having this particular forum readable by non-members here. Voting will remain open for ten days.

NOTE THAT THERE WAS ALSO SIGNIFICANT AGREEMENT ABOUT CREATING A "MEMBER'S LOUNGE" TYPE FORUM TO MOVE PARTICULARLY PRIVATE DISCUSSIONS INTO. THAT FORUM WOULD OBVIOUSLY NOT BE READABLE BY NON-MEMBERS

I voted yes on the presumption that a sensitive forum would be created for private threads.

I'm with Impenitent.

But she'll never know because I'm behind her.

I'm still thinking, and I would dearly love to hear from people who voted No.

I voted no.

This forum is not mere chatter and giddyness, but contains serious discussion and - to a degree - implied or obvious information about members I would not want to spread in the broad public (e. g. "This is really embarrassing to write...", but there are others as well).
Therefore I voted no.

I voted no for the same reason as mummpizz. We are hardly going to go to the trouble of winnowing out any sensitive thread to a more private place even if such a refuge is created later. Another lesser reason is that if everything is visible without having to physically join it will encourage passive lurking at the expense of active participation. Give enough to tempt people but there should be more that they get if they join up.

Well if it's readble to to mebers (people who register) whats the point? It's the same as having it open to the public. Since the board will be open anyone can join. Nothing here or anywhere on the board is ever going to really be private or hidden once we open and new people start signing up.

I say keep it open. You can set it so only people who're registered can post if you're concerned about trolls. This is a symposium, not a clubhouse. Besides, it was these types of discussions that attracted me to TORC in the first place. Yes, I joined TORC for Manwe.

Stop looking at me like that.

My understanding is that all the forums will be set so that only members can post. Otherwise we could (and would) have anonymous trolls whom we could not block or ban.

All we're discussing is whether nonmembers can read the forum.

That's just why I think it should be readable! ;)

(Wouldn't want the reader who is thinking about joining have to do so on the evidence of chatter and giddyness only. :blackeye )

We aren't going to do a search of the forum for sensitive info, I think, but if someone alerts us to a thread, and says they don't want this or that read by non-members or google, we'll just move it to the "members' lounge" (now agreed upon to be created) :)

I am still undecided but I think I'll vote yes. I know people have posted some very personal stories, but as long as names and addresses aren't mentioned I don't think asking people to register before reading is going to make that much difference.

Threads of a very personal nature can be moved to the new Member's lounge forum which is accessible to registered members only.

Maybe knowing that will make voting easier ;)

In any case it's great to see a quorum has been reached :D
Thanks for voting!
