Btw - what determines what goes in to History? Is it for all business threads we don't need any longer or only the historically important ones?
I would say only the historically important ones. But we're really making all of this up as we go along, you know that. :)
I agree, only the historically important ones :) - so, before moving any, should we post them here, so that people could say yeah or nay to their historic value or just go ahead?

Sounds like before my time! I didn't realize you wanted that thread to sink from sight. It does not have to be stickied if that was not its intention.
Jny, I pointed that out because Alandriel posted after you had mentioned that and didn't say anything, so I was wondering whether she had overlooked it maybe?
Probably before your time, yes - but I remember people saying it should sink to the bottom of the forum, that's why I just wanted to ask again, make sure there are no misunderstandings. :)

I see all these things that need to be done, and I can feel the rising level of concern with our timetable, but, as a non-Ranger, I have none of the tools to help with these tasks (that I am aware of).

If any of you can think of anything to pass off to me (typing?), I am willing to help with whatever time I can donate.

Eru... Thank you. :)

Prim.. that is a horrible schedule :Q ... I wish I lived closer to you, I would love to help you out!

Sorry - I did see it but then it passed right out of my brain again
The B77's History/chain of events you were wondering about, right?

Well, that one it was agreed much earlier, should rest where it falls - last postdate 28Oct2004. Definitely not to be made as a sticky but if it is cross-referenced in a sticky index along with other threads, then I'm sure there will be no opposition.
BTW - as I told Voronwe the links in that thread are all current and working unless the crossreferenced pages are now longer able to be viewed due to having been deleted. But even in this case I let the links stand.

Anthy and Eru: I hope you're not upset with me in any way.

[edit once more ]
Anthy: since you're volunteering to type :halo: there is the wee matter of doing a new Comprehensive guide, with linked references where necessary :halo: I don't think any of the current Admins are working on that but I might be wrong......

Is it okay to hug in the Jury Room?

Whatever I can do. If we determine that the Rangers have not gotten to this yet, I am willing to help out with this guide, of course. I will need some direction, certainly, but I can take my questions to PM's, in order not to clutter up the Jury Room. ;)

Sorry about the confusion, folks. I thought laureanna had said, either in forum management or in the invite forum itself, that she would write a short history of the invite process before the forum is demolished. Then someone asked if she meant a history of the whole board, and she said NO! That's what made me think of Alandriel's history of the whole board ... the history forum is going to be crowded with historical threads and having stickies at the top of the forum which serve as a directory will be very helpful to members.

I did already write a directory for the jury room threads, and I'm online now for the first time today with time to post, so I'm going to update the urls right now for threads already moved. I'll also post the directory here so that it can eventually be moved and posted in the history forum under the administrator i.d., but we can't actually move it until the last ratification threads are finished and moved. I won't know the new urls until those threads are actually in place.

Regarding a history of the invite forum, I don't mind at all to do something very brief, since I was here almost at the very beginning - a short introduction and then a directory of the threads. I'll post that here too, for people to see and eventually to move to the history forum with the admin i.d.

OK - I've got to get to work on this now. That's a blinking lot of threads!!

Jny: it does not change the url if the threads get moved to another forum as the thread ID 't=' stays the same).

If you look at any thread url it says

viewtopic.php?t=1768 (for this thread)

it looks straight for the topic number, there is no forum number in the url

;)

[edit to add] the url only temporarily changes when you're viewing the thread after just having posted and you go back to look at the thread. Then you'll see the actual post # . If you go out of the thread and back in again, you'll have the same url without the post# id url

Alandriel - I just discovered that! W00t! So the job is already done, for the jury room threads at least. Now - I'm going to put the director in the next post. All threads to be moved eventually are in the directory, even though they have not yet been moved. More threads will go into the directory as we proceed here through phase 3. So, I'll suggest not moving this directory to the history forum until next weekend, which will allow me the latest possible updating. After that, any updating will have to be done by an admin using the admin i.d. inside the history forum.

THREAD TITLE: Directory of Charter Convention Threads

Board77 convened a committee to write its Charter on March 11, 2005, empowering the committee to complete and codify its by-laws, to write its Mission Statment, and to create the related documents and handbooks that would allow the membership to function smoothly as a self-moderating community.

The Charter was ratified by the membership and all threads associated with that process are archived in this forum.

Links are provided below for anyone wishing to read through the threads in order. Threads are divided into the following categories and listed by the date on which the thread was opened. All dates and times are Greenwich Mean Time.

Members’ Follow-Along Threads During Convention
Convention Committee Threads
Votes Taken by the Committee
Ratification Threads

That's lovely, Jn. Thank you.

It was actually I who mentioned something about writing a history of the invite process. What I was thinking of mainly was preserving a history of how invites came to be STOPPED more then anything else, as I think that might be a subject of interest to new members who have been kept out these past few months. But I think that information will be preserved in the History Forum (which had not yet been proposed by you when I made that suggestion) so I am less concerned about it then I was then. But I would be happy (:)) to collaborate with you on something like that if you were interested in doing so. :D

Good enough, Voronwe. I'm still editing the post above - needs a few corrections here and there, but I'll turn my attention to the invites when that is done.

Faaaaaaaaaaaaaantastic ! :D

.. what a lot of threads :Q All lined up like this now.....WOW!
The noseys have their work cut out :D

Just another wee mention of that old Chain of events thread. Absolutely no reason to include a link into the above summary of course. A link should go into the new Comprehensive guide and of course also a link to this above summary. That way it would be wrapped up nicely.

Fantastic work Jny

No, I'm not working on that - just sayin'. :D
(Actually, I don't even rightly know what is meant by that - something to replace Farawen's guide, I suppose? :scratch )

Jn, *sniff* that is BEAUTIFUL!

I was just trying to imagine what my reaction would be were I to walk into this messageboard for the first time... I think I would be blown away by the absolute organizational mecca this place is.

Just sayin'.

:cheers

And Hobby, I know as much about what that document would be as you do... I actually had supposed that it was an updated Farawen thread, too.

Thanks, people. :)

OK - here's a first draft of Directory of Invitation Threads. This intro will doubtless need some modification.

********

THREAD TITLE: Directory of Invitation Threads

The founders of Board77 began inviting friends to join the board at the end of December, 2004. Whoever was on the board at that time simply proposed friends for membership and all would vote on their acceptance. In keeping with the principle that all members should have equal say in the running of the board, new members who registered were also allowed to propose their own friends for membership. As a result, the number of new members grew exponentially during the first three months of 2005.

An invitation forum had been created for voting on new member acceptances. As friends began to invite friends, the number of people who actually knew the invitee became smaller and smaller relative to the number of people voting on their acceptance. Members tried to work out a voting scheme that would give adequate but not undue weight to objections. It was, however, increasingly clear that the Board was becoming too large to deal with membership questions by means of a voting process.

Generally, with the membership growing exponentially, questions about how the board would be governed as a democracy loomed large in our minds. On March 4, Board77 decided to form a committee for resolving our governance issues and writing our Charter. Because the number of voting members needed to remain stable for ratification, it was decided to halt all invitations as of March 7, 2005.

At this point, news of Board77’s existence had spread and members were appearing from the ‘outside’ attempting to register. It was unpleasant for us to tell people that the board was temporarily closed, especially as the charter-writing process took much longer than anyone expected. But the creation of a long-lasting community with member moderation was important enough to us to maintain our resolve to finish the Charter and open the board permanently.

Managing the early growth of Board77 has been an important part of our history. Some of the relevant discussion is preserved here to show how the character of the board evolved during those early months, when an invitation process was in place and we considered how to open to the public without sacrificing the character of our closely-knit community.

Threads are listed in the order in which they were opened. All dates and times are Greenwich Mean Time.

Notes:

1. Voronwe - I’ve added your suggested threads here, plus the thread that is still at the top of the Invite forum regarding demolition. One of your threads went into the Charter directory.

2. A few people had suggested that we keep Liddy’s thread about inviting famous people, and others said they didn’t like that thread ... too irreverent, perhaps? Anyway, here’s the link. Should we deal with this separately?

I've seen no discussion of that thread - was it in Invites? :scratch

Anyway, I think it can go - or, if people insist on keeping it, be moved to the Turf, as just one further silliness.
It's definitely of no historic value and shouldn't be kept with the other threads that remain from Invites, IMO.

Jn, thank you so much.    That is exactly what I had in mind - and more. I am very happy. :D:):D And I wouldn't change a word.

My thoughts about Liddy's thread are the same as Hobby's. I see no real reason to save it, it has no particular historical significance and is certainly not TLE's best comedy effort, but if people want to retain it, is should be moved into the Turf forum. It would stick out like a sore thumb if we put it in the History forum.
