I need some help from the current admins.

When the articles being ratified right now are all complete, we will be trying to clean the place up and open the board at the same time. It might be a bit rushed, so I thought I would introduce this topic now and see how much of it we might be able to get done in advance. The topic is: what to do with all the convention threads.

Someone suggested that we have a History Forum, and that strikes me as a good idea, because we’ll want the Business Forum and the Jury Room clean for current business once the convention is over, but we also want an historical record of this process, as well as the early history that Alandriel already wrote and the summary of the invite process (or a few of those general threads?) that laureanna was going to write (?). These things should be in a form that is easy for a noob to access and follow if one were interested.

I went through the Jury Room and Business Room threads today and made a directory of all threads having to do with the creation of the charter, putting them in categories (like ‘pre-covention member discussion threads’) and then listing them in order according to the date they were opened, so that the directory is chronological within each category. There are little tiny messes here and there that need to be straightened out - some things in the Jury Room that are more appropriately left locked in the Business forum, shadows of threads that were moved, etc. And some of the actual heavy lifting can be done early for the things that are already ratified or will be ratified (we hope) by June 19.

We need to answer a couple questions before we can do this:

• We need a majority of current admins to agree that a new forum is needed
• We need to decide which big forum to put the subforum in
• We need a name for the forum
• When a thread is moved, does it’s navigation bar info change? i.e. will I have to repaste all the url’s in the directory? Seems logical that it would change, but I don’t know for sure.

Could we begin discussing this now, in the hopes of reaching a decision and beginning some of the heavy work before June 26?

Jn

I agree with Voronwe, although the name "The Mathom Closet" does appeal to me more than "The History Forum"—a little quirkier, maybe a little more honest. ;) But maybe it's not dignified enough.

Why only the current admins? :(

¶4: Routine powers of Administrators

• Activate memberships
• Create new forums when a majority of current administrators agree it is necessary
• Move the appropriate threads into newly created forums as necessary
• Create temporary admin positions when a majority of current administrators agree this is necessary, provided that the appointees have served as administrators in the past and no formal complaint has been issued against them for their actions as an administrator. A temporary appointment will last for two full weeks and may be renewed one time (four full weeks in total).
• In the Jury Room and the Archive, enable posting rights, delete illegitimate posts from Arbitrations and Hearings, and delete threads when they are finished.
• In the Thinking of England Forum, enable posting rights when age confirmations are received.
• Lock, split or move threads upon request of members, or when it is necessary to improve the coherence of a forum. The thread originator must be notified beforehand.
• Edit Posts if they affect the display of the page, e.g. stretched pages, after notifying the poster
• If a poster registers an invalid email address, restrict posting rights to the Bike Racks and send the poster a PM so that a correct address can be provided
• Download new smileys
• Delete double posts at the request of the poster

Agree on a new forum. :)

Right below Business would be nice, I think.

I like a name with "Mathom", but wasn't that already the plan for the Mayor's forum?

You mean whether the links will break? I think they don't, but if I have time I'll give it a try in the experiment forum. :)

Din,

We need current admins for creating the forum, but not for naming it. I have a feeling it was the name you wanted to weigh in on? ;)

Thank you, guys - I'm relieved that you agree we need a storage room for our history.

In all seriousness, is the Mathom Closet a sufficiently dignified name for what we're going to put in there? For my part, I like the Tolkienisms, but not everybody does so we should probably talk for a day or so about possible names.

I'm all for talking! :D

I'd prefer "Mathom-house" to "Mathom Closet", but that was what, I think, had been suggested for the Mayor's forum.

In Tolkien's definition, a Mathom is "anything that Hobbits had no immediate use for, but were unwilling to throw away" - in a way, that describes old business-discussion threads quite well, I think! (Better than a mayor's residence, too.) ;)

But I'm open to a more dignified name, too. :)

I think it may be true that the mathom name is not dignified enough for this use. :P

If it weren't under consideration as the name of the charter itself, I would say "The Red Book" would be perfect. In some ways, that name would be more appropriate for this forum then it would for the charter itself, since what the Red Book is is a history, not a constitution.

As for the description, I propose this:
Quote:
History became legend, legend became myth

C00l subtitle, V.

Hobby, the Mayor's forum is called Michel Delving.

Although I don't have an official voice here :P ;) I do like Voronwe's suggestion: Red Book as Forum Name and that  subtitle.

The Red Book seems an odd name to me.

Mathom house, or mathom room seems very apt for where we store old threads in case they may be useful sometime - and because they have sentimental (or historic) value.

It's true, though, that the Tolkien references seem to grate on some people so perhaps we should give it a rest.

The subtitle works though. :)

As to where: The info/welcome forum alongside the Business subforum seems apt.

Tolkien borrowed the name of The Red Book from The Red Book of Hergest. It dates from around 1400 and is one of the primary sources for the Mabinogion. The Red Book has, as I am prone to say, a long history, specifically of being a collection of odd bits. Very appropriate.

So, IS, do you think we should include the clarifiction:

"The Red Book" (not of Tolkien, you dolt, of Hergest!) followed by "History became legend, legend became myth"

;) :P

Do we need to vote on a name, or are people generally agreeable to:

ThE RED BOOK
History became legend, legend became myth

as superior to the mathom house/closet?
