This is a 'split' from this thread to bring the discussion re naming of a new archive-type forum back on track without actually splitting posts from that thread.

Summary

A new forum has now been created to accommodate all finished threads from the Business Forum as well as the Jury Room in order for those forums to stay current and uncluttered.

Viv, can I assume that you will be leading this discussion? The only request that I make is that any vote at least extend into Monday so that Alatar and anyone else away for the weekend can participate.

Are the forum name suggestions closed? If not, I would suggest simply calling it The Attic. You know, the place where you put things you're not actually using but don't want to get rid of.

I like The Attic. However, my current favorite is still Chamber of Marzabul.

But if we choose a twee Tolkien name for the name of the forum, I think we should not use the twee Jacksonian subtitle that I previously suggested (or the various variations on that theme that others suggested). I think we would need something a little bit more descriptive.

I would suggest:

Threads documenting important developments in board77's history.

Actually, I suppose they are both short enough that they could be combined:

History became legend, legend became myth. Threads documenting important developments in board77's history.

Except then it would both start and end with the word history.

So maybe this:

History became legend, legend became myth. Threads documenting the development of the board77 community.

Weekends are difficult for me as I've said before and so the timing of this is rather unfortunate for me. However, I would like to still take in suggestions till Sunday evening (GMT), will try to keep this updated to the best of my abilities and then begin a vote on Monday, giving it 72 hours (if you agree). After all, naming it is not exactly totally crucial now that we have the forum in place already ;) - so folks can take their time with this and I have more time during weekdays.

Off to update now with the newest suggestions

Friends, I am reposting something here that I said in the Business Room thread on Changing Admins Names:
Quote:
I agree that every little thing should not be put to a vote. For instance, I'm about to propose in the convention that the name that we decide on for the new History forum NOT be put up to a vote by the membership. Generally speaking, the creation of a new forum is up to the discretion of the Rangers, as long as a majority agree, and I think that includes the name of the forum. The Rangers should definitely get input where needed, but do not need the explicit approval of a majority or a super-majority of the members. In this case since the forum is so closely related to the work of the convention committee, I think it is appropriate for the committee to agree on a name, but technically speaking, I could have insisted that laureanna, Nin, Prim and I decide what the forum should be called.
I believe that the only reasonable interpretation of the charter provision giving Rangers the authority to create new forums if a majority of the Rangers agree is that this authority includes naming the forum. It does not make sense to me that the Rangers could create a new forum without holding a confirming vote by the membership, but that it would be necessary to hold a membership-wide vote on the name of the forum.

In this case, I do think it makes sense to have the committee decide on a name. But I don't think there is any need to send that name to the membership for approval. Its not a part of the charter. And as TolkienPurist pointed out in the Business Room thread, holding a vote for every name in the board would get old awfully fast.

Comments?

We'll name this one here. The members have enough to do right now.

No, you could not!
You could have insisted that laureanna, Nin, Prim, hobby and you decide what the forum should be called! :rage:

(I told you, didn't I? ;) :) )

Apart from that I agree. :)

(Did anyone suggest we put the forum name to membership vote at all in the first place? :scratch )

Can we do a 48 hour poll starting on Monday morning, European time?

I'm not thrilled about any of the names so far - nothing rings big bells for me. Nothing seems to ring big bells for anyone else either. So we might as well put the paucity of our genius to a simple poll and pick the name everyone hates the least. ;)

Hobby, how could I have left you out?   My sincere apologies. I'm quite sure that you know that it was not intentional.

No, but all of the other votes that we have had in the convention have had to be ratified by the membership, so I wanted to make sure the difference here was pointed out.

No problem, Voronwe - of course I know it's not intentional!

(I just had to point it out, because it was so spooky - the next line, (I told you, didn't I? ;) :) ),
referred to that only the day before I had told you that I often think people tend to forget I'm around. :) )

Alandriel, I was joking about The Vault (just as I was about The Bilge Tank and..er...whatever the other one was)!

Frankly, I don't mind what it's called so much, as long as it's simple and the sub-title isn't too high-falutin'. I think sometimes we get carried away. Some things just need to be shoved in a drawer so they're not in the way, after all, without the need for a velvet lined, beribboned, gilt box.

I rather like Laureanna's suggestions. Simple, but not boring. Interesting, but not twee. I especially like And So It Began ..., The Way We Were, and Threads of Historical Interest.
