But let me ask a question -- is there any kind of "diversity" requirement as among all the various official capacities that exist on this Board, apart from the specific membership requirements of there being a current or former Ranger, etc.? What I'm asking is whether it would be possible for the same core group of about a dozen posters to basically take up every position on every committee, or is there somewhere in the charter a limitation on how many positions (including committee posts) any one person can hold at a single time? I'm not necessarily saying we have to have such a limitation -- on the one hand, it would help to avoid a somewhat natural (and by no means necessarily sinister) centralization of "authority" in the hands of the dozen or so most passionate posters -- on the other hand, if other people are not stepping up to the plate to take up committee or other official positions, you can't really force them -- so I see pros & cons to having such a limitation -- just wanted to raise the question for future consideration.

Poing well-taken, TORN.

You mentioned something along these lines earlier, like a committee pool to ensure a random selection as we have for Rangers and Jurors. I thought that was a cool idea actually, but there was some opposition to it as well.

Our thinking (and what the opposition mentioned) was that we wanted committees formed of the people who cared about the issue - to make sure they actually functioned and didn't disappear into the aether midway through - but it is also possible, of course, that it will be the same people who care about all the issues while the rest care about none, and we'd like to avoid that situation too.

No reason why we can't take up this discussion in the future. It doesn't have to begin as a full blown charter ratification. Keeping participation up could be a nice, calm Business Room discussion, and if it results in a better idea for the charter, those interested can always organize an amendment process from there.

I think the problem is getting a diverse enough group of people interested in taking office.

It's not the idea that there's a core group of one or two dozen posters who fill all the offices.
But if all the other 180 members don't want to take part in that, this is what'll happen.

Maybe we should think about means to get people interested in getting involved in the running of the board.

One of the reasons I may never be a Ranger, and certainly never Mayor, is that I want to keep my options open to participate in committees that address "Crises" here on an ad-hoc basis.

It helps keep my ADHD at bay. :D

This one seems to have stalled at 37 votes, even while the other two have made quorum. I hope that's not a harpinger of bad things ahead.

Voronwe,

I think people sometimes lose track of which threads they voted in and which they didn't.

If it doesn't pick up two more votes when people return for the last four ratifications, we'll send out a special email.

No, CONFRATERNITY. Fraternities are for guys, sororities for gals, and confraternities for people who go to cons. :D

I've never been to a con.

I almost went to Orycon once.

My kids are just now reaching the age where it is beginning to leak through to me that I can go places and do things without inconveniencing anyone. After 18 years.

Phhfffft! I thought TORN's retort was clever.
Obvious, but clever.
