Other then the person who actually owns the domain name where this site would be moving, of course. :)

Um..

You lost me there. So Steve has suggested that if we want to move, we should change the rules for ToE? Or are we all just sitting and anticipating such a suggestion? And even if he does, later, so what? He has said many times that by owning the domain he does not intend to take more power than any regular poster. He's not going to blackmail us, sheesh.

I'm just getting a little confused here and annoyed, because for me, moving is moving and nothing else. And whatever motions to change the rules happen afterwards would happen whether we stayed here or moved to someone else's server. Posters can always suggest things be changed. Are you guys saying you'd rather stay on phpbber because then people will be restrained by phpbber's admins and will know they cannot try and change the board to suit them by opening up ToE for example?

Just tell me plain out, because either I'm crazy or I missed it: has there actually been a plan, suggestion, petition, project by any member to use the move as a justification for changing the rules about what is and isn't appropriate on this board?

I just don't get where this discussion came from at all. It's just a server move.

Yup, that's right. It's nothing more than a server move.

So, getting back to that...

Fixer answered my question about the Alandriel ID. So, could one of the rangers check if they have access to that ID, and contact phpbber through it and ask for an time estimate for when the backup would be ready?

Once we have a time estimate, somebody has to volunteer to come up with the monetary charge. :)

That wasn't a very nice suggestion there Voronwe. Even if Steve were to suggest a rule change, it's not like he'd go and implement his own wishes and disregard everyone else. Not assuming the worst of a person would be nice.

Could the ToE thing please be dropped? It's stirring up unecessary problems.

I agree with Eru. I was actually kind of confused with Prim's arguments because I knew that moving had nothing to do with ToE.

Voronwe, if the owner of the domain (gee, I wonder who that is), has suggested changing the rules before we move or to ensure we move, could you please quote it?

What ifs are very bad ways to stir up arguments.

We do have access to *alandriel*. I'll contact phpbber as soon as I figure out how.

I’m not trying to stir up arguments, but I do think the ownership issue should at least be considered before we actually move. A few things that come to mind are:

1. We currently have a policy (charter) that states that we will become a member owned board. The simplification committee is proposing to delete that section from the charter, but noone has discussed what will become in its place. As long as we stay here it is not really an issue (the board is “ownedâ€

Of your three statements, tinwe, only the second really has a strong bearing, and that is who is liable.

If Lidless does NOT have administrative authority on the board, exhibits NO control over the board or its operations, and merely pays for the hosting and domain name I would think a court would have a hard time finding him liable for anything that happens on the board when he would have no power to CHANGE anything on the board. He could only revoke the board as a whole instead of exercising administrative authority over its citizens. It would be in Lidless' best interest to avoid ALL positions of responsibility on the new server simply to protect himself from potential legal liability. I do not think that he would have a problem with that. ;)

EDIT: After being consulted with by a lawyer, as long as there is no one in direct ownership of B77 then the trail of money would be followed and Lidless would be responsible for everything. A non-profit corporation would be a good dummy organization to take liability instead.

For my part I would prefer the TOE to have a lower age limit to at least 16 given that there is no porn in it and it would benefit that age group when they need it most. However, to balance that, I understand the theoretical possibility of a professional (teacher) for some dumbass crapped-up reason losing their job because adult discussions took place where 16 year olds can post and read, even though the discussions (so far) are quite above board and not intended to be pornographic or to titillate.

The way I see it overall then is that B77 isn't really growing and the number of people falling into that age gap is minimal at best. Let's keep it to 18. If a 16 yo has an adult problem, there's always YM and e-mail I suppose.

As for changing any rules by diktat, that has never been proposed by me. I have been one of the staunchest supporters of democracy on this board and I tire of the ennui of V-man's insinuations. :tired:

Now, although the name is owned by me, that truly is not the case. I have stated many times it is in my name purely as a nominee for the members of Board77, a trustee. I claim no legal rights to the ownership and fair use of the name over and above the other members.

And just to make it clear, I hereby sell any sole ownership I have to the name www.board77.com to the current and future members of www.board77.com and this messageboard on www.phpbber.com, with each and every member having an equal part in ownership. The consideration is for any member to post "strudel" in this thread.

These are the guys I'm using for another site. ToE issue aside (and I'm not getting involved with that) the price is good. I've found them easy to deal with so far, but its early days yet.

You could also look at www.hostreview.com

Just stumbled on this in my brief wandering today and need to comment.
The Rangers have access to that ID *here* on this board, but not to the Alandriel registered on the phpbb help board (just to clarify).
Anyone really can register over on the help board with any ID and ask any questions they like so my ID per se here is not really the issue at all.
When we did the last backup of B77, phpbb simply uploaded it somewhere and gave me the url. I trust that IF they manage to do another backup, the procedure will be very similar. All the Rangers will have to do is explain that the 'admin of record' ID is now managed by a group of people rather than just one person.

As to thehow: Phpbb support

Hope that helps :)

PS: just in case you need a ref.... thread on support regarding change of admin of record

I know a guy who runs a very secure server and offers decent prices. Because he doesn't advertise much, this allows him to keep his prices low. I know the owner personally but I put it forth as this is a group decision. If people want to talk to him, tell him Fixer sent you. We have a good working relationship.

Thanks, Alandriel!

I went to the phppber support forums and saw a thread in which the only two posts were this:

Quote:

Hi There,

I want to backup my forum, but the option not on the menu within CP.
I would like to transfer the data to a local machine for testing.

Thx,
Mikee

we dont provide individual forum backup. there is a charge of $25 if you would like us converting your customized tables to the default phpbb tables.

And now I'm confused (and probably the wrong person to be handling this). :help:

Mossy, that's exactly what you want. When he says:

Quote:

He means that you can't backup "Turf" on its own. On a PHPBB Board, there are "Categories" and "Forums". Turf is a forum. The Round Table is a category.

This will be a backup of the entire board including all fora. That's what you want from them.

Thanks, Alatar!

I'll go register and request a back up as soon as I get back from class.

Further updates at events warrant.

Update!

I got this reply:

Quote:
we have the entire backup, but we dont provide back-up for individual forum.

if you need the dump, there will be a charge of $25 and ONLY a forum founder can get the dump.

Does this mean we'd recieve the old back up?

FUCK!

Apparently they are really selective about the credit cards they use. They rejected my credit card too. I know it wasn't for lack of funds as I have several grand in there right now (I have to replace a central A/C unit soon). Someone else is going to have to take the domain name thing as I only have one credit card. Sorry. :(

Mossy - can you please give me a direct link to the thread in phpbb help where you've asked?

If it comes down to it and they won't give any of you access to the backup but it bounces back again to me as the initiator of B77 then I'll get you that backup, I've done it before......

but only - and sorry if I'm very adamant about this

only if the membership here has sussed out and voted on moving, and we have a place to do so, and it is clear how the new place will tick.
My being adamant about this has nothing to do with paying or not paying. It has to do with... well.... on prinicple - if that makes sense.

IMO it would be 'silly' to request yet another backup.... and B77 is still dwiddling its thumbs (metaphorically speaking of course).
