Wow Eru! You’ve really been busy! That’s quite impressive of you to get it up and running so soon. Many thanks for all your hard work.

If I ever get some time I’ll take a look and see if I can recall any of things that were on the old board that I might be able to add.

Once again, thanks for all you’ve done!

OK - I registered at the training board!! (A day late as usual).

Can someone make me a Ranger over there? Eru, you have the coolest tutorials set up!

I will get the groups set up today, probably in an hour or two.

I'm sorry, Eru. Important things seem to slip out of my mind very easily these days.

Edit: I'm Prim over there. Could someone make me an admin, please? Thanks!

<claps hands>

I've been posting here all day though and need to take a break momentarily. Let me eat my lunch and have a walk before looking at the admin panel which will doubtless freak me out of my wits. You guys are about to learn the true meaning of "not a geek."

Thanks, Eru!

Jn, you don't have to be a geek to do this stuff.

Not saying it doesn't help. :)

Eru,

Something isn't working right. The screen looks the same as it always does, and when I try to click on the admin portal it tells me that the portal is turned off. There's a 'click here after five seconds' message, but when I click on that it doesn't do anything.

Shouldn't my screen look different? There's not even a sticky thread option, etc. on the reply box.

Admin portal? I'm not sure what you're talking about. Do you mean the admin panel?

Do you not have the power to lock threads, to edit posts other than your own?

I don't have any power at all that I can see.

Let me go back and look again. I didn't see anything beyond the usual on my reply boxes and your posts looked normal ... like, no extra options. but I'll double-check. Maybe I'm missing something.

Jn

Oh wait! Yes, I do have an edit button for your posts. And I guess the x will delete your post. What does the ip do? Ok ... I'll go through the tutorial.

You're definately an admin. I just went and checked. Your name is in orange on the admin panel user list....and your name is in orange where it shows what users are online.

The ip shows you what the IP address is for the user posting that post. It can come in handy if you think a person is using multiple screennames.

Glad things seem to be working.

Ok - I'm on the first sentence of the second tutorial - how to create new forums. It says - Go to the Admin panel. Where the heck is the admin panel? I don't see anything at all on my screen.

Jn

wait ... wait, ok I see now down at the bottom I have a moderator link and an administrator link ... ok let me fool around with this a bit.

Sorry to be so dense!

It's at the very bottom of the index page. It says "Go to Administration Panel". Click on that, then you'll have to relog yourself on...it's silly. That will show you the admin panel.

You can start with the easy stuff first, like deleting deleting and editing threads. :P

I finished your whole tutorial! Boot camp and all. That was really great, Eru.

Actually, once the admin capabilities showed up, I realized that they really had not been there before. I think I had to click on that Administrator link at the bottom of the page to activate the panel.

The only thing I didn't do was create a new admin because there was no one to turn into an admin.

I had a bit of trouble with two things:

1. Once the admin panel was showing, I did not know how to get out of it. Or does everyone just leave it showing the whole time?

2. I was able to move a thread and leave a shadow but I was not able to delete the shadow afterwards. Is that done in a different place?

I didn't go through and look at all of the options on the panel ... will do that later tonight or, more likely, tomorrow.

OK, I'm not afraid of it anymore. :D :D And I made a little crib sheet from your tutorial in a write document so that I'll have it in front of me.

Waaaay cool.

Thank you so much for going to so much trouble to get me trained in a hurry, Eru. I really, really appreciate it.

I'm starting in making fake forums for the groups/permissions training, and whoo. Am I rusty. I do not remember the comparable settings here on the real board, and the admin panel doesn't work quite as I remember it doing way back when.

I think I need a friendly ranger to tell me the following:
  • The Forum permissions settings for Turf, ToE, and the Jury Room.
  • The group permissions settings for All_Users.
I'll post this in the Ranger thread in Business—just wanted to let people know I'm working on it as fast as my seriously enfeebled brain allows.

1. Once the admin panel was showing, I did not know how to get out of it. Or does everyone just leave it showing the whole time?

At the very top of the menu that's on the left-hand side of the screen on the admin panel, there are three options: Admin Index, Forum Index, and Preview Forum. Clicking on Forum Index, gets you out of the Admin Panel.

2. I was able to move a thread and leave a shadow but I was not able to delete the shadow afterwards. Is that done in a different place?

Go to the Boot Camp forum. Now scroll down to the bottom, look at the bottom right-hand side of the page where it tells you all the things you can do in that forum. There is one that says "You can moderate this forum". Click on the link. It will take you to the Moderator Control Panel and you'll see some blank squares next to all the thread titles on the right. If you click on the box next to the shadow thread, then click 'delete', the shadow will be deleted.

Aha! Thanks so much, Eru.

I'll go delete that shadow right now!

As soon as Prim gets the info she needs from the Rangers, she'll be setting up the user groups so you can hopefully see how easy that stuff is.

If you want a poster to play around with, use the Whipping Poster ID. You can make him an admin if you want...then undo it...do anything you want to him except delete him and change his password. You can use him and Troll when it comes time to use the user groups.
