Was it the heat or dehydration, do you think?

We also entered a summer weather pattern, which is overcast in the 60. I treasure it.

I'm pretty sure it's the heat. I stay well-hydrated.

I just texted my wife that I had to weave home because of flooding, and autocorrect changed it to *leave* home because of flooding. That was a fun conversation.

(not any type of cataclysmic flooding, but enough to leave deep standing water on the roads)

Ok, it has become semi-cataclysmic now. Glad I'm many feet above river level.

I actually started heading to the "creek" at the bottom of the hill from my house to get some pictures, only to discover the whole area was cordoned off by police. Evidently it undermined a house and collapsed it into the water. I sort of think you need to stop calling it a creek once it starts doing that...

No. I'll try to take some later once the road's open and I can get away, but the water will be lower by then

Creeks can be pretty big and still be creeks. Hydraulic pressure is impressive whatever the name. The creek on my parents' property sometimes moves boulders the size of a car when it's in flood. In dry season, there are places where you can jump from one side to the other.

Creek vs river is pretty much up to the person who originally named the body of water.

I was too busy and too much of a (temporary) single parent this weekend to drive down to the flood and take pictures, and now it's too late because the creek/river has receded back into its banks (it had basically converted itself into a moving lake that filled the entire valley). This is a good thing, because it's supposed to rain hard again tomorrow.

Also, reports that the creek had swallowed a house turned out to be exaggerated. One house that was built stupidly close to the water had a part of its foundation collapse, but it is still standing. But the part that caved in had gas lines attached to it, and the residents were trapped inside since the creek had surrounded the building, hence the emergency presence.

Here's a news photo. To really appreciate what you're seeing, you have to know that the creek (normally!) runs parallel with the short side of the house about 100 feet off to the right. And is about 5-6 feet wide. On the day this picture was taken, the "lake" probably continued another 100 feet out of frame to the left.

I've been a bit astounded by all this because, while it did rain 2-3 inches last Thursday, and that's a perfectly respectable amount of water, it's a long way from Biblical. And this isn't the first major flooding incident this year either; lately, it seems whenever more than a couple inches fall at a time, things end up under water. But today the news posted this little table:
Rainfall through June 24

Year Rainfall total (in.) Hours with rainfall
2013 8.89 130
2014 7.98 132
2015 9.29 131
2016 8.42 135
2017 7.11 135
2018 15.50 158

Average of 5 years, not including current year 8.34 132.6
I think the ground must just be deep-saturated from all the water that's fallen since things started in February.

Edit: The first version of this post showed 55 inches this year. The news has since posted a retraction saying that number was an error. They changed it to 13.77, and then to the current 15.50. That's still high, but not that high, so I'm back into "why can't the ground handle this?" territory.

It's still almost twice the amounts of the previous years, and this year isn't even half over. It looks huge compared to what you normally get.

The data is for rainfall through June 24. I'll edit to make that clear... But yes, it's more than twice what we had this time last year.

Edit: They changed the number again! Up this time, from 13.77 to 15.5, which puts us solidly in "roughly twice the average" territory.

Is everyone else in the middle of a lethal heat wave, or is it just central Canada?

I just drove through a 30F change in temperature in about 25 miles. It was so abrupt that the tire pressure indicator came on.

And it's not like it's an altitude change.

There have been summers when the temperatures stayed in the 50s for weeks. My son's summer camp once was filmed for a news story, kids in sweatshirts and jackets on the beach in July. Now we get high 60s and mid-70s, and over the hills inland they stay above 90 on cool days.

We really appreciate Karl the Fog over here, let me tell you.

I was up at 4am today to drive J to the airport. It was already about 78F. I'm not going outside today, and I refuse to feel guilty about that. Aside from a lack of sleep, it's grossly hot and humid.
