Harry has been requesting to stay inside the past few cold night. It's only been 13 F / -10.5 C , but he's pretty old now for a giant breed and obviously isn't dealing as well with cold as he used to.

Used to be he seemed perfectly comfortable outside until it went below about 5 F / -15 C.

That kind of ice can be lethal to trees, even though it's beautiful.

Oh, yes, our complex lost many trees. The community lost many trees and limbs; a large branch went through the roof and eaves of my old house. My parents are still without power, as are many in this area, and they may not get it back until this weekend. We have mutual aid coming from VA and IN to help our power crews.

So yeah. I drove home in it last night, but it wasn't coating the roads yet, just my windshield until it warmed up.

I've been reading about the California wildfires with horror. It sounds like a major disaster. 631 missing people? What are the chances that they'll be found alive and unharmed?

Oh my goodness, I've not seen that kind of ice to that extent, Lali. It is beautiful but scary...

Glad to hear Frelga is ok, re: the wildfires, but yes, it is horrifying the extent of it all.

My parents still don't have power, so they're coming here for lunch and to warm up. (I've offered the shower, too, but they're not taking me up on it yet. Well, I've offered for them to stay here, as well, but they're not cooperating.)

The wildfires are terrifying. :( I hadn't heard the missing count being that high, so I hope that number is wrong.

Here was a happy tearjerker story from this morning:

(I think it's actually a mule?)

Unfortunately, the number of missing has gone up yesterday to over 600. No telling if it's accurate, but it is indeed official. It's a huge disaster, as devastating as a major hurricane, and it keeps going. Air quality index is in Very Unhealthy territory, schools are closing. In San Francisco, cable cars, which have open sides, were replaced by buses. You can look straight into the sun without squinting (although you probably shouldn't). It's bad, guys.

I don't think things will get much better until we get rain. We are expecting some on Wednesday, I really hope. It comes through.

Yes, it's coming down pretty hard. The air is breathable for the first time in two weeks. I can feel my body re-oxygenating. It was getting hard to stay awake.

Unfortunately, many victims of the fires are still living in tents in parking lots. The rain will put an end to the fires, but it may bring mudslides and wash away remains of people's lives.

Sometimes, privilege is breathing smoke when others have their house on fire.

On a lighter note, this quip from the National Weather Service.

Russia. It originated in Russia.

Those of you who know Russian, please tell them we'd prefer they keep their weather to themselves. :)

Wind chill of minus 36 today and not much better tomorrow. On days like this, I can barely keep the house warm enough. The furnace has been going non-stop since yesterday and it's only at 17 degrees.

That was absolute shit.

It poured all day until it decided to turn bitterly cold. Then it was ice and then icy snow. And blizzard winds. My drive home, which normally takes 8 minutes, took 20. There's no road to see. The windshield wipers can't clear the windshield. There were no plows.

Ugh. But I'm glad I'm home. Now I'm just hoping that the power stays on.

Also, God willing, I'll be in Hawaii in less than 48 hours.
