Definitely. Best trivia question answer ever. :D

BTW, does anyone else think Aredhel's head is put on backwards in the otherwise stunning spear-throwing picture?
I don't think it's backwards; I think her whole position is a little weird.

Anywho, next question . . . when I think of one.

Just to tide us over until Mossy thinks of an appropriate question (:poke:), here is a picture of Tuor at Vinyamar, wearing the armor left for him there by Turgon hundred's of years before at Ulmo's direction. He is surrounded by the swans that led him there. Notice the swan on his shield as well. :)

Edit: It would help if I actually included the picture.

You should post that in the "Men in Uniform" thread over in the Turf. I think they'd like it there. :D

While we're waiting on Mossy, a quickie:

In Sam's Troll song whose bone is the Troll gnawing and which bone is it?

It belonged to the uncle of someone named Tom. (no relation to Tom Bombadil, as far as we know)

Trivia note: the melody is the same as the traditional ballad, "The Fox" (no relation to the fox who observed the hobbit's departure, as far as we know).

The curious can see the original words to the ballad here. There's also a link to a performance of the song by Peter, Paul and Mary (no relation to The_Mary, as far as we know).

I forget which bone it is - I could look it up, but that would be cheating, wouldn't it? :)

Wrong. And yes, it would be cheating!

Exactly.

"For it looks like the shin of my nuncle Tim
and it should be a lyin in the graveyard.

Caveyard, paveyard, though dead he be, it belongs to he
and it should be a lying in the graveyard"

I have always wondered how Tom recognized his uncle's bone so very specifically.

Perhaps there was some pathology or scarring that rendered it identifiable?

This hole in the plot has always disturbed me deeply and pulled me completely out of the story, and I am so glad PJ had the genius to know it didn't belong in his brilliant films.

Which part was wrong? Or do you mean incomplete?

Tim was indeed the uncle (or "nuncle") of someone named Tom.

Am I wrong in thinking that "nuncle" is some dialect for "uncle"?

In the "History of Middle Earth Volume 27 - Other bits from dads wastepaper basket" Christopher explains that Tom was actually the first emergence of the Flesh Eating Zombie mythos in Middle-Earth. As such he had a more than passing acquaintance with the body parts of his family members. Little of this remains in the final version. Apart from this little vignette the last vestiges of the Zombie mythos can be seen quite clearly in the "Dead Marshes" scenes.

Fascinating.

*Edited to add - Sorry Jude I misread that. I thought you were saying the uncles name was Tom!*

I didn't know volume 27 was out yet.

<is inferior>

I heard they found some old drawer linings under the Professor's socks—can volume 28 be next?

:rage: Then edit your post to say "right", Alatar! (no relation to the blue wizard who went into the East and founded the Scientology movement, as far as we know)

You know I'm just yanking your chain, right? :D

Sorry bout that.

Okay, here's a question: What is the name of the cave that Túrin and his men live in (with Mîm the dwarf), and why is it called that?

I believe that they're waiting to release volume 28 till they can track down the Professor's old school desks to see if he scratched anything in the surface.

You know, if you take the pad next to someone's telephone and run the side of a pencil lead very lightly over the surface, you can see things that were written on the previous pages.

Amon Rûdh is the name of the hill in which Mim's house was built. The cave became known as Bar-en-Danwedh, the House of Ransom, for two reasons. Turin agreed to spare Mim's life if the petty dwarf shared his home with Turin and his outlaw companions. That's the first reason. But one of Turin's companions shot and killed one of Mim's sons, and Turin offered to pay a ransom to Mim in recompense, if ever he came into riches. That is the other reason it was known as Bar-en-Danwedh.

Ask away, Voronwë. I don't know why you even wait for your answers to be accepted. :P Yay for illustrated answers. :D

Perhaps you should suggest this to them. The fans shouldn't be deprived of his telephone messages. He may have scribbled some vital piece of information while ringing someone. :nono:

If that picture is too big for people let me know. I posted it directed from the site it was on, rather then downloading it, adjusting the size, and uploading it to photobucket.

I just love Ted Nasmith's skies.

Let's see? Let's go with something a little harder.

Why did Tar-Meneldur relinquish the sceptre of Numenor to his son, Tar-Aldarion, "suddenly and long before due time"?

[ img ]
(Tar-Meneldur's right name was Irimon; he took the title "Meneldur" from his love of star-lore)

That's in UT, isn't it? I don't have it here but wasn't it because Gil-galad called on the King of Numenor for assistance and Tar Meneldur decided that his son would do a better job. And... wait, up until that time the Numenoreans did not engage in arts of war nor made weapons, and Tar-Meneldur was reluctant to make the choice of refusing Gil-galad or arming his people for future war so he let his son make that choice?

Close enough? Far off the mark?
