This would be a good place to rant about what would have been one of my favourite musicals, but instead gets classified with the also-rans.

I speak of The Pirate, the almost-great movie with Judy Garland and Gene Kelly. Anyone know it?

Garland is simply magnificent in this movie. So is Kelly. And what a story!

But what an ending. Sheesh. That silly little "Be a Clown" number that has nothing at all to do with everything that preceded it. Did they run out of ideas or something?

The tension is building during what is meant to be Gene Kelly's execution scene (sorry, I don't remember the names of the characters). Judy, who has suddenly guessed the identity of the real pirate, attempts to expose him by faking a hypnotic trance. In a great bit of dialogue, she heaps scorn upon her intended bridegroom, provoking him to reveal his identity. A riot breaks out. What will happen next?

Nothing happens next. We suddenly cut to a punch-and-judy number which ends the movie. It would have been charming enough in another context but here it's just silly and pasted-on.

Crap. :( And it could have been such a great movie. But it isn't.

Who cares about plot?

It's a musical!

Totally love that movie! :D
(I didn't even remember the strange ending, I must have pushed that aside in my general enthusiasm - or, in short, Hypnosis! ;) :D )

What I first hit reply for, though, is to say that no way is :Wooper: a "Rupert"!!! :Q

I do!

It wouldn't bother me so much if the plot was rubbish from start to finish. But since most of it was so good, the lack of a good ending is a real letdown. :rage:

I like The Pirate too!

But I'll openly admit to watching almost anything with Gene Kelly in it... and also to owning quite a few of the musicals featuring him. :D

:Wooper: has always struck me as a George. I'm partial to that name though.

I've never seen The Pirate, but curiosity has certainly been piqued. I'll have to do a library run when I get home and see if they have it (and many other things ). It should be worth it just for the fabulous Gene Kelly. :D

:Wooper: definitely doesn't strike me as a George at all. Rupert, more so. But I'm not sure. Perhaps we should have a "Name the Wooper" poll.

It's cliched, perhaps, but I love Singing in the Rain. :D

Okay, since things seem to have quieted down a lot lately . . .

I know we only have half the month left, but what say we write ourselves a show: Board77: The Musical.

And if not, what are people's favourite showtunes? Favourite lyrics?

Ok. Any musical has to begin somewhere.

The stage is set. A group of posters walk out onto the rotating stage.

[POSTERS]
Look down, look down
Don't look 'em in the eye
Look down, look down,
You're here until you die

[IAVAS]
TI'll post a thread
Of posters who were canned

[POSTERS]
Look down, look down,
If not you'll join the banned

[IAVAS]
I've done no wrong!
Moderator, hear my prayer!

[POSTERS]
Look down look down,
Moderator doesn't care

[IAVAS]
These guys were great
I'll put them in my thread!

[POSTERS]
Look down, look down,
If not you'll lose your head

[VORONWE]
If he gets banned ya won't see me
Here for dust!

[POSTERS]
Look down, look down
Don't look 'em in the eye

[HALPLM]
How long, oh Lord
Before these movies die?

[POSTERS]
Look down, look down,
You'll always be alone
Look down, look down,
The fanbase now has grown

[JON]
Now bring me poster 24601
Your memberships up
And your bans begun
You know what that means.

[IAVAS]
Yes, it means I'm free.

[JON]
No!
It means your Premiere Memberships gone
You caused a fight

[IAVAS]
I opened a thread.

[JON]
You posted Bans!

[IAVAS]
I put in Lidless name.
The M00bies Forum was close to death
And we were starving.

[JON]
You will starve again
Unless you learn the meaning of the TOS.

[IAVAS]
I know the meaning of those many posts
A slave of the TOS

[JON]
You're banned for what you did
The rest because they challenged me
Yes, 24601.

[IAVAS]
My name is Iavas-Saar

[JON]
And I am Jon
Do not forget my name!
Do not forget me,
24601.

[POSTERS]
Look down, look down
You'll always be a slave
Look down, look down
You're standing in your grave.

[IAVAS]
Freedom is mine. The earth is still.
I feel the wind. I breathe again.
And the sky clears
The world is waking.
Drink from the pool. How clean the taste.
Never forget the years, the waste.
Nor forgive them
For what they've done.
They are the guilty - everyone.
The day begins...
And now lets see
What this new board
Will do for me!

(I have nothing to contribute to the musical... just to say that Singin' In The Rain is my favourite movie musical ever... closely followed by Meet Me In St Louis!)

:Wooper:

Please remember that Wooper need a part in our musical!

Try not to get worried
Try not to turn on to
Problems that upset you
(oh) Don't you know
Everything's alright
Yes everything's fine
And we want you to post well tonight
Let the world turn without you tonight
If we try
We'll get by
So forget all about TORC tonight

Everything's all right
Yes everything's all right yes

Post and I shall  you
Post and I shall  you
:Wooper: for your sig-pic yeah
(oh) Then you'll feel
Everything's all right
Yes everything's fine
And it's cool and the freedom's sweet
For the fire in your head and feet
Browse your posts
Browse your posts
And relax
Think of nothing tonight

Everything's all right
Yes everything's all right yes

[HALPLM]
Iavas your fine arguments
Pointed and incisive
Should have been saved for the TORC
Why have they been wasted?
We could have raised maybe
Three hundred trolling newbies or more
People who are fangirls
People who are purists
Matter more
Than your freedom here!!!

[POSTERS]
Try not to get worried
Try not to turn on to
Problems that upset you
(oh) Don't you know
And we want you to post well tonight
Let the world turn without you tonight
If we try
We'll get by
So forget all about us tonight

Everything's all right
Yes everything's all right yes

[IAVAS]
Surely you're not saying
We have the revision
To save the film from its plot?
There will be jokes always
and Dwarves to be Tossed!
Look at the good things you've got!
Think characterisations!
Think of the locations!
You'll be lost
You'll be so sorry
When they're gone!

Alatar,
are you parodying something or are you making this up from scratch? Cuz that's damn impressive if you're making it all up yourself! :)

Nah, the first is "Look Down" from Les Mis. The second is "Everythings Alright" from Jesus Christ Superstar.

Does that mean it's not impressive :(

Alatar: I recognized Jesus Christ Superstar!! Brilliant!!

"Now if I join you, it matters that you see
These sordid kinda things are coming hard to me.
It's taken me some time to work out what to do.
I weighed the whole thing out before I came to you.
I have no thought at all about my own reward.
I really didn't come here of my own accord.
Just don't say I'm ... banned for all time.

I came because I had to; I'm the one who saw.
Ted can't control it like he did before.
And furthermore I know that Ted thinks so too.
Ted wouldn't mind that I was here with you.
I have no thought at all about my own reward.
I really didn't come here of my own accord.
Just don't say I'm ... banned for all time.

Liddy, you're a friend, a worldly man and wise.
Iavas, my friend, I know you sympathise.
Why are we the b-77ers? Why are we the ones
Who see the sad solution - know what must be done?

I have no thought at all about my own reward.
I really didn't come here of my own accord.
Just don't say I'm banned for all time."

And for your viewing pleasure, my daughter Jessica, about 5 years ago:

Well, it's not as impressive as if you'd come up with it all on your own. Don't mean it ain't funny though. :D

Duffy and Alatar, Those were wonderful! :D I've always loved JCS. See, I knew I should have burned the second disc.

Let's see . . .

There is a website on the net
I like to go there whene'er I can
Aren't any admins to ban me
Not in my website on the net.

There is a forum that's full of :spam:
There are a hundred :Wooper:s and :Duck:s
Lots of discussions but now exams
All in my website on the net.

There is a Charter all in white
So there's no virtual aristrocracy
It's nice to see, though hard to write
It says: 'Let's have democracy.'

I know a place where no one's lost
I know a place where no one cries
Banning at whim is not allowed
Not in my website on the net.
