Musicals are a wonderful thing. Singing, dancing, acting. Not to mention all the drama.

We here at Board77 have all four of those things already. Thus, it's time for us to go to Broadway!

November is Musicals Month. Movie musicals, Broadway, the West End, you name it. And most importantly, we shall write our own. If we feel like it.

To start off . . .

A classic . . .

[ img ]

A modern classic . . .

[ img ]

And one of my personal all time favourites . . .

[ img ]

I've never run a theme month before, so please bear with me. No one else had started one, though, and it's November 2, so . . . here goes.

I love that music is a universal language. There are so many songs out there that mean so much to me, and the lovely thing about musicals is the fantastic visuals they give you to accompany the songs. It is not a genre I'm particularly open to, but when something catches my heart, it burrows in pretty deep. These are my favorite movie musicals of all time:
  • 1. MOULIN ROUGE (2001)

    2. GREASE (1978)

    3. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (2004)

    4. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952)

    5. THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965)

    6. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991)

    7. SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER, AND UNCUT (1999)

    8. NEWSIES (1992)

    9. GIGI (1958)
The only musical I've ever seen on the stage was Phantom of the Opera, which I was able to attend last year in London. It was one of the best experiences of my life, and I remember sitting up there in the balcony with tears running across my face because I'd remember some of the songs that mom played for me during my childhood when she was a Sarah Brightman fan. It can be overwhelming when the past sneaks up on you like that. Everything was so new, but still slightly familiar. Sort of like when I saw FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING for the first time - some of it rang a bell because dad's a Tolkien nut, but it was mostly entirely fresh for me. Best of both worlds!

Anyway, it worked out perfectly that I saw the musical in February, and learned that there was a movie version being released at the end of the year. Even though I didn't get to see it until January, it was a lot of fun downloading clips and sneak peaks from it before then. Once it finally came to my town, I treated my mom, brother, and his girlfriend to dinner at the Opera House (a local dance club and bar that is inspired by the 1925 Lon Chaney film, and fully decorated with movie memorabilia), then we toddled on off to the cinema. Great night!

I got more stories like this, but I'll save them for another post. Cheers for now, and welcome to board77, prettyinpink. :)

Where to start? I owe my marriage to musicals. Well, lets keep it simple to start with...

Favourite musical is always the one I'm listening to at the time. Right now it's Company by Stephen Sondheim. Written in 1968 it predates me by a year yet somehow manages to feel as fresh as if it was written yesterday. I have a copy of the Donmar Warehouse production that was broadcast by the BBC. Stunning cast, stellar performances and it's a live performance filmed on stage. Magic.

The story revolves around Bobby, a 35 year old batchelor and his fear of commitment. We see his life in the company of 4 married couples and how he interacts with each. Here's the final number:

FRIENDS [frantically]:
Bobby...Bobby...Bobby baby...
Bobby bubbi...Robby...Robert darling...
Bobby, we've been trying to call you.
Bobby...Bobby...Bobby baby...Bobby bubbi...
Angel, I've got something to tell you.
Bob...Robbo...Bobby love...Bobby honey...
Bobby, we've been trying to reach you all day.
Bobby...Bobby...Bobby Baby...Angel...Darling...
The kids were asking--
Bobby...Bobby...Robert...Robby...Bob-o...
Bobby, there was something we wanted to say.
The line was busy...
Bobby...Bobby bubbi...
Bobby fella...Bobby sweetie--

ROBERT [speaking]: Stop!...What do you get? [Sings]
Someone to hold you too close,
Someone to hurt you too deep,
Someone to sit in your chair,
To ruin your sleep.

PAUL: That's true, but there's more to it than that.
SARAH: Is that all you think there is to it?
HARRY: You've got so many reasons for not being with someone, but
Robert,
you haven't got one good reason for being alone.
LARRY: Come on, you're on to something, Bobby. You're on to something.

ROBERT:
Someone to need you too much,
Someone to know you too well,
Someone to pull you up short
And put you through hell.

DAVID: You see what you look for, you know.
JOANNE: You're not a kid anymore, Robby. I don't think you'll ever
be a kid again, kiddo.
PETER: Hey, buddy, don't be afraid it won't be perfect. The only thing
to be afraid of really is that it won't be.
JENNY: Don't stop now. Keep going.

ROBERT:
Someone you have to let in,
Someone whose feelings you spare,
Someone who, like it or not,
Will want you to share
A little, a lot.

SUSAN: And what does all that mean?
LARRY: Robert, how do you know so much about it when you've never
been there?
HARRY: It's much better living it than looking at it, Robert.
PETER: Add 'em up, Bobby. Add 'em up.

ROBERT:
Someone to crowd you with love,
Someone to force you to care,
Someone to make you come through,
Who'll always be there,
As frightened as you
Of being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive.

AMY: Blow out the candles, Robert, and make a wish. *Want* something!
Want *something*!

ROBERT:
Somebody, hold me too close,
Somebody, hurt me too deep,
Somebody, sit in my chair
And ruin my sleep
And make me aware
Of being alive,
Being alive.

Somebody, need me too much,
Somebody, know me too well,
Somebody, pull me up short
And put me through hell
And give me support
For being alive,
Make me alive.

Make me confused,
Mock me with praise,
Let me be used,
Vary my days.
But alone is alone, not alive.

Somebody, crowd me with love,
Somebody, force me to care,
Somebody, make me come through,
I'll always be there,
As frightened as you,
To help us survive
Being alive,
Being alive,
Being alive!

If only there really were Batboy the Musical! :bawl: I'd pay to see it. :P

Hmm . . . favorite musical? I loved Phantom (somehow the movie just didn't quite do it for me), I did enjoy Les Miserables, and any Disney movie of course (even though I don't really think of those as musicals). ;)

If characters sing to themselves or break out into spontaneous, impeccably-choreographed mass dance numbers, it's a musical. ;)

I have really really fond memories of seeing West Side Story as a kid of seven or so. Been meaning to see it for aaages (yes, I haven't seen it since then), but amazingly I still remember a bunch of the music more than 15 years later! :Q

The only theatre musical I've ever seen was Les Miserables on Broadway my senior year of high school. It was AWESOME. Never been to a major theatre production before or since and it was truly stunning...would love to do that more often. :)

Of course, everybody knows that the best musical ever was the South Park movie. :D:D

I saw Hairspray last year, it was good. I was a big fan of the movie growing up, yay Ricki Lake!! Segregation never integration now!! :D

Has anyone seen Mama Mia?! It's a must see. I will see it whenever it comes to Chicago (it's been here at least 3 times already) and have contemplated going to Vegas since it's permantly stationed there. It's that good!!

My parents saw it in Vegas, TM. They both loved it and bought the soundtrack immediately, playing it all summer. Even dad, who fell asleep on the jumbo-tron at the Celine Dion concert.

Any musical with lines like this *has* to be good:

"Tracy, I'm in love with you no matter what you weigh!"

:D

I'm also a big fan of Wicked, finally, after seeing the musical in May & listening to the OCR over & over, I've fallen in love!

Favourite live musical ever would have to be Crazy For You! Gershwin =

You know the one play that stuck out as the one I'd wanted my money back after seeing would have the be West Side Story, I was fantastically disapointed. I don't know why it was bland, flat, and didn't do anything for me.

Theater for is very emotional. There are only a couple muscials that I've walked out of without having tears in my eyes, West Side Story being one of them. For some reason I get really involved and the music does something to me. I remember when I saw Wicked earlier this year I wanted to stand up and cheer for Elphaba and I wasn't alone. People were cheering for her and shouting and it wasn't annoying like I thought it might be it was really amazing.

Theater is an overwhelming experience for me, much like Beatlemania and those crying Elvis fans. Except I'm not hysterical. ;)

ADD: Cross posted with you SO. If you go see The Lion King make sure you have good seats. It's very much a scenery based play. The first time I saw it we had awesome seats, and didn't even realize how good they were until the second time we saw it and couldn't see half the stage. It sucked! :x But it's my favorite Disney movie so it was okay

Thanks for the tip, TM! :D But first I'm definitely going to check out Wicked while it's still here. I'm curious to see what all the hullabaloo is about after the way you, Mossy, and practically everyone else has raved about it. ;) :D

Cem, I saw Crazy for You in London with Ruthie Henshall. Brilliant Show. Luckily enough I got to to it a couple of years ago. I played Lank Hawkins opposite Mrs Alatar who was playing Irene. As chronicled elsewhere we met onstage as Bernardo and Anita in West Side Story.

Sorry, but Blues Brothers in not a musical. But then neither is Buddy and I'm leaning strongly against Mamma Mia and We Will Rock You. In a musical the songs move the story or relate to the story. They are not songs sung by characters in a film or show. The Who's Tommy is a musical. Mamma Mia and We Will Rock You are just glorified Tribute Bands. If you want to hear an Abba musical, go see Chess.

And I heartily agree that Wicked is one of the best new musicals in years. Looking forward to the movie version of Rent!
