Actually, I DO know why that song has been running through my head!

A couple of days ago, my husband brought home a video clip of a house whose Christmas lights were set to music http://www.i-am-bored.com/bored_link.cfm?link_id=14019 and claims he wants to do something simliar to our house!

Anyway, my daughter put on that song as the appropriate song to go with such a display and played it loudly, and it's been stuck in my head ever since.

It's Christmas at ground zero...

These are my favorite lyrics from "We Three Kings":

Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom;
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone cold tomb.

Er ... wow. Thanks... Is it returnable? :help:

;)

A great theme month topic.........as usual, Alatar!

For me, the lyrics of "Good King Wenceslas" probably speak more of the spirit of the season than any other carol I can think of. I love the tale that is told within it.........wonderful imagery!

Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even.
Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
Gath'ring winter fuel.

"Hither, page, and stand by me
If thou know'st it, telling
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?"
"Sire, he lives a good league hence
Underneath the mountain
Right against the forest fence
By Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me flesh and bring me wine
Bring me pine logs hither
Thou and I will see him dine
When we bear them thither."
Page and monarch forth they went
Forth they went together
Through the rude wind's wild lament
And the bitter weather

"Sire, the night is darker now
And the wind blows stronger
Fails my heart, I know not how,
I can go no longer."
"Mark my footsteps, my good page
Tread thou in them boldly
Thou shalt find the winter's rage
Freeze thy blood less coldly."

In his master's steps he trod
Where the snow lay dinted
Heat was in the very sod
Which the Saint had printed.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure
Wealth or rank possessing
Ye who now will bless the poor
Shall yourselves find blessing.

Best Christmas song ever :D:
Quote:
Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Walking home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

She'd been drinkin' too much egg nog,
And we'd begged her not to go.
But she'd left her medication,
So she stumbled out the door into the snow.

When they found her Christmas mornin',
At the scene of the attack.
There were hoof prints on her forehead,
And incriminatin' Claus marks on her back.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now were all so proud of Grandpa,
He's been takin' this so well.
See him in there watchin' football,
Drinkin' beer and playin' cards with cousin Belle.

It's not Christmas without Grandma.
All the family's dressed in black.
And we just can't help but wonder:
Should we open up her gifts or send them back?

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Now the goose is on the table
And the pudding made of fig.
And a blue and silver candle,
That would just have matched the hair in Grandma's wig.

I've warned all my friends and neighbours.
Better watch out for yourselves."
They should never give a license,
To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer,
Walkin' home from our house, Christmas eve.
You can say there's no such thing as Santa,
But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

Fairy Tale of New York is one of my favorites, ever. It makes me want to :bawl: and it's great to sing along to.

Another fave, available in fine Irish style on The Chieftains Christmas album The Bells of Dublin:

The Rebel Jesus
by Jackson Browne
Quote:
The streets are filled with laughter and light
And the music of the season
And the merchants' windows are all bright
With the faces of the children
And the families hurrying to their homes
As the sky darkens and freezes
Will be gathering around their hearths and tables
Giving thanks for God's graces
And the birth of the rebel Jesus

They call him by the "Prince Of Peace"
And they call him by "The Saviour"
And they pray to him upon the sea
And in every bold endeavour
And they fill his churches with their pride and gold
As their faith in him increases
But they've turned the nature that I worship in
From a temple to a robber's den
In the words of the rebel Jesus

We guard our world with locks and guns
And we guard our fine possessions
And once a year when Christmas comes
We give to our relations
And perhaps we give a little to the poor
If the generosity should sieze us
But if anyone of us should interfere
In the business of why there are poor
They get the same as the rebel Jesus

But pardon me if I have seemed
To take the tone of judgement
For I've no wish to come between
This day and your enjoyment
In a life of hardship and of earthly toil
There's a need for anything that frees us
So I bid you pleasure and I bid you cheer
From a heathen and a pagan
On the side of the rebel Jesus
More traditional faves:

Joy to the World
Carol of the Bells (the "Ring Christmas bells, Merrily Ring, Tell all the world Jesus is King" one)
What Child is This? (aka another incarnation of "Greensleeves")

And finally, the MOST joyful (joyful, not glorious, mind you ;)) song I know (My church sings it in Latin, English and Spanish for Midnight Mass and it's beautiful):

Adeste Fideles
Quote:
Adeste fideles,
laeti triumphantes,
Venite, venite in Bethlehem!
Natum videte,
Regem angelorum
Venite adoremus,
Venite adoremus,
Venite adoremus
Dominum.
Handel's Messiah also plays ad nauseum in my apartment, both this time of year and Easter. :D

I ADORE christmas and therefore I adore christmas music!! I am more of a song girl than a hymn girl myself though!! James Taylors Have Yourself a merry Little christmas is particularly comforting to me and I like it for that reason. I am also a huge fan of I saw mommy kissing santa claus!! (Jackson 5 does it best) For Oh Holy Night Fans Kelly Clarkson does a very nice version, She can really belt out those high notes!! Well done with the theme month

Song: Please Come Home for Christmas Lyrics

(Charles Brown/Gene Redd)

Bells will be ringing this sad sad New Years
Oh what a Christmas to have the blues
My baby's gone I have no friends
To wish me greetings once again
Cries will be singing Silent Night
Christmas carols by candlelight
Please come home for Christmas
Please come home for Christmas
If not for Christmas by New Years night
Friends and relations send salutations
Sure as the stars shine above
But this is Christmas yes Christmas my dear
The time of year to be with the ones you love
So won't you tell me you'll never more roam
Christmas and new Years will find you home
There'll be no more sorrow no grief and pain
And I'll be happy, happy once again
Oh there'll be no more sorrow, no grief and pain
And I'll be happy, Christmas once again

Just got this in my email today! My favorite Christmas hymn!
Quote:
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

A HIDDEN MESSAGE FOR ADVENT

There are seven stanzas in the earliest version of this text, but in the
original Latin (12th century, some say 8th century), the seven verses were meant to be sung at different services on the days prior to Christmas Eve.

"Our" first verse ("O come. O come, Emmanuel") was actually the last in the proper sequence. In the early plainsong version, these verses are known as the GREAT ANTIPHONS or the "O" ANTIPHONS, because each one starts with an extended setting of the word "O."

But wait! There's more. Please read carefully.

The anonymous poet (or poets) who put these texts together did an amazing job of including a most delightful hidden message-a special meaning for a special time of year.

Here are the beginnings of the seven verses:

1. O Sapientia (Wisdom from on high) - December 17
2. O Adonai (Lord) - December 18
3. O Radix Jesse (Root of Jesse) - December 19
4. O Clavis David (Key of David) - December 20
5. O Oriens (Dayspring, Light from the East) - December 21
6. O Rex Gentium (King of the Nations) - December 22
7. O Emmanuel (Emmanuel, God with Us) - December 23

What's so special about that? Well, there is a wonderful acrostic message
built into the structure of the verses. If you take just the first letter of
the words that follow the initial "O" of each verse, you get "SARCORE,"
which means absolutely nothing; but if you turn those letters around, you
get:

"ERO CRAS," a two-word Latin sentence which means, "I will be tomorrow."

In other words, on December 23, the long-expected Jesus is saying,
"Tomorrow's my birthday." The various prophetic names used in the text (Key of David, King of the Nations, Wisdom from on high, etc.) were selected and ordered in such a way that they pointed to the coming of Messiah. WOW!

HERE ARE THE CHANT PHRASES WITH FULL TRANSLATIONS:
www.op.org/domcentral/life/17sapien.htm
www.op.org/domcentral/life/18adonai.htm
www.op.org/domcentral/life/19radix.htm

www.op.org/domcentral/life/21oriens.htm
www.op.org/domcentral/life/22rex.htm
www.op.org/domcentral/life/23emmanu.htm

If you do a web search for "O Antiphons" or "Veni Emanuel," you'll find lots more.

And so we sing and pray, "Come, thou Wisdom from on high, Lord God, Root of Jesse, Key of David, Dayspring, King of the Nations-O come, Emmanuel. You are GOD WITH US. Amen!

"Let every heart prepare him room."

Have a great day,

When A Child Is Born
A ray of hope flickers in the sky
A tiny star lights up way up high
All across the land dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass when a child is born

A silent wish sails the seven seas
The winds of change whisper in the trees
And the walls of doubt crumble tossed and torn
This comes to pass, when a child is born

A rosy hue settles all around
You got the feel, you're on solid ground
For a spell or two no one seems forlorn
This comes to pass, when a child is born

Spoken: And all of this happens, because the world is waiting.
Waiting for one child; Black-white-yellow, no one knows...
but a child that will grow up and turn tears to laughter,
hate to love, war to peace and everyone to everyone's neighbor,
and misery and suffering will be words to be forgotten forever

It's all a dream and illusion now
It must come true sometime soon somehow
All across the land dawns a brand new morn
This comes to pass when a child is born

Here's my favourite:

Grown Up Christmas List

Do you remember me?
I sat upon your knee
I wrote to you with childhood fantasies
Well I'm all grown up now
Can you still help somehow?
I'm not a child but my heart still can dream

So here's my lifeful wish
My grown up Christmas List
Not for myself
But for a world in need

No more lives torn apart
That wars will never start
And time will heal our hearts
Every man will have a friend
That right will always win
And love will never end
This is my grown up Christmas List

May kindness rules our lives
Not just the strong survive
Sweet tears for all the thousand years on mind
This is the world I pray
We will all share some way
Help me begin by reaching out my hand

No more lives torn apart
That wars will never start
And time will heal our hearts
Every man will have a friend
That right will always win
And love will never end
This is my grown up Christmas List

Why does this illusion call the innocence of you?
Maybe when the time believe we can find the truth
No...

No more lives torn apart
That wars will never start
And time will heal our hearts
Every man will have a friend
That right will always win
And love will never end
This is my grown up Christmas List

This is the prayer that I will keep
This is my grown up Christmas list
Christmas list

What a nice thread, Alatar! :)

I particularly liked the sound sample links! :D

(So, "Oh Holy Night" is "Cantique de Noel", a French romantic art song by Adolphe Adam - has a bit too much pathos for a Christmas song for my taste, but I like it if it's sung well. :)
Here's the original text:
Quote:
"Minuit, chrétien, c'est l'heure solennelle
Où l'home Dieu descendit jusque' à nous,
Pour effacer la tache originelle,
Et de son père arrêter le courroux,
La monde entier tressail le dèspérance
A cette nuit qui lui donne un sauveur.
Peuple à genous attends délivrance.
Noël voici le Redempteur;

I liked the Josh Groban version - erm, stupid question  - I know the name, but I don't know what the guy is famous for - and hints where I might have heard the name? )

Lali, thanks for the informative post, I knew about the O-antiphons, but not the sentence they made! - And I love your sig! :)

TIGG - your sig makes me bouncy! :D

Thanks, truehobbit! :)

Cantique Noel is beautiful (but only if sung by someone with a good voice). The best I've ever heard it sung was in my little, hick church where I grew up. There was this little bald, scrawny short guy, and he got up to sing. I was thinking, "Oh this'll be great!" But he began to sing, and out came the most gorgeous, beautifully deep bass voice I've ever heard! :Q I get chills just remembering it. :)

cem's our resident expert on Josh Groban, I think. All I can really tell you is that he is a very talented, young vocalist, and he's pretty famous here in America (especially with the younger gals). ;)

Nice lyrics, Lurker and TIGG. :) I don't think I've ever heard either of those.

Athrabeth has beat me to Good King Wenceslas, which is one of my favourites. I also like Deck the Halls and the Twelve Days of Christmas - I'm a bit of a traditionalist.

Threads like these make me think of all those things I would love to share with you all but can't because of the language barrier. Grrr.

Well, I'd still like to contribute a poor little substitute for what I could have shared.
My father has a favourite carol about which he always writes an article or two over Christmas. We call it the Great Oxymoron...

Here's a rough translation of the first verse:

God is born, power trembles
The lord of the heavens is naked
Fire rises, light darkens
The Infinite has boundaries!
Shunned- praised
Mortal King over the centuries
And the word became the Body
And lives among us.

It's very dignified and very clever verse....damn you all, learn some Polish!!!
:rage:

 Of course it is beautiful, Rodia! And you're absolutely right--we should all learn some Polish and German and French and Spanish and whatever other language our wonderful b77ers speak at home.

So teach me something! :D

(I know Spanish, and a tiny bit of stuff in a few other languages, but, sadly, that's all. :( )

I like the Jackson Five when I was a kid and this one of my faves:

SOMEDAY AT CHRISTMAS

Someday at Christmas men won't be boys
Playing with bombs like kids play with toys
One warm December our hearts will see
A world where men are free
Someday at Christmas there'll be no wars
When we have learned what Christmas is for
When we have found what life's really worth
There'll be peace on earth
Someday all our dreams will come to be
Someday in a world where men are free
Maybe not in time for you and me
But someday at Christmastime
Someday at Christmas we'll see a Man
No hungry children, no empty hand
One happy morning people will share
Our world where people care
Someday at Christmas there'll be no tears
All men are equal and no men have fears
One shinning moment my heart ran away
From our world today
Someday all our dreams will come to be
Someday in a world where men are free
Maybe not in time for you and me
But someday at Christmastime
Someday at Christmas man will not fail
Take hope because your love will prevail
Someday a new world that we can start
With hope in every heart
Someday all our dreams will come to be
Someday in a world where men are free
Maybe not in time for you and me
But someday at Christmastime
Someday at Christmastime

I've been putting together my mixes for my Christmas party, and came across this gem I'd previously forgotten (but love!):

(Song is here)

http://hometown.aol.com/jesusandsue2/Ch ... awaii.html
Quote:
Mele Kalikimaka

Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say,
On a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day,
That's the island greeting that we send to you
From the land where palm trees sway,
Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright,
The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night,
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii's way
To say "Merry Christmas to you."

Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say,
On a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day,
That's the island greeting that we send to you
From the land where palm trees sway,
Here we know that Christmas will be green and bright,
The sun to shine by day and all the stars at night,
Mele Kalikimaka is Hawaii's way
To say, "Merry Christmas,
A very Merry Christmas to you."
