Michigan, and especially *west* Michigan, is on the extreme western edge of the Eastern timezone. In fact, by rights we should be on Central time, but our predecessors switched to Eastern a century or two ago in order to stick it to Chicago or possibly Wisconsin over some dispute or another (yes, the US has always been like this). In consequence, it stays light longer in the evening than it does most places, but it's dark in the morning. Very, very dark. The end of DST will help a bit, but only for a few weeks.
