I just looked up Sulphur Mountain: 2451 metres. I don't know if that's the highest I've been, or just the average. How much difference would 400 metres make?

That I can't tell you. I haven't spent much of my life at elevation; my own record is a hike to 13.5k ft/4.1k m, and I was absolutely struggling to get enough air by the end of that. I've also stayed for a week at 7k ft/2.1k m, and that was enough that I could sort of tell something was up* when I'd exert myself, but not just sitting around.

*pun unintended and horrible, but I'll let it stand

This discussion has sent me off on one of my periodic "look up odd corners of the world on Google Maps and daydream about what it would be like to run away there" episodes. What do people think about the Falklands?

Interestingly enough, I just got home from the library where I came upon a book about striated caracaras. (I didn't know that exactly, just that it was a book about "the world's smartest birds of prey.") In the opening pages, I have been taken on a lovely journey from the Antarctic to the Falklands. So I'll let you know what I think of them soon!

Update: Oh dear, it seems like Darwin, at least, was not overly fond of the Falklands.

"Desolate and wretched" and "detestable latitudes" are his words.

Looks like our heatwave is gone for now. Starting yesterday it's been in the low 20's and it's awesome.

The highest I've been was Mauna Kea summit, at 4.2km. I was fine at the visitor center, about 2.8km. At the summit, I had to sit down, and so did my son who was almost 13 at the time. We drove up, so exertion was minimal.

I climbed Mt Julius Caesar, 13,220 ft, 4029 m, as a teen. I spent an inordinate amount of time on the way up stopping to admire the flowers and scenery (and catching my breath). There were Skypilot plants blooming up there. They only grow above 10,000 feet. A once in a lifetime experience.

Is anyone following Hurricane Ida?

Following? Yes. Have any solid idea what the situation on the ground is? Not so much.

We might get the scraps of it tonight or tomorrow. It looks like it was a disaster, for sure.

Laureanna, how gorgeous!

Fog of storm is still in effect, but so far it appears that Ida has killed more people in NY/NJ than it did in Louisiana. That's a twist I didn't see coming.

Remember when we all said we couldn't wait for 2020 to be over?

I was pretty pessimistic, yet I still proved to be too optimistic.

An annual milestone was reached today: I switched to long-sleeve shirts.

Dave, have you reached a decision about relocating to the Falklands?
