Winter has arrived in Ottawa.

What about where you are?

It was lovely. Clear, about 60, no wind.

It's just bitterly cold here. It was very windy and rainy but today seems sunny and calmer. It's just very cold. :(

It's getting cold here, but not bitterly so.

This weekend we finished building an insulated stock tank cover for watering our cattle. This means we can continue to use the automatic filler during the winter months and I won't have to stay out there half an hour at a time each day waiting for the tank to fill from the freeze proof faucet.

Best of all, we'll be able to leave for a day or two as needed. Up until now, we've had to be available to water them every day during the winter months. Now, if we have to be elsewhere for some reason, we can. :D

The floating balls are to help insulate the open water part of the tank. That little bull wasn't really sure it was OK to drink between the balls at first. When the cattle get used to it, I'm going to completely fill the open area with balls.

This was my own design from start to finish, so I'm pretty excited about it. I hope it works! We are taking a chance with it, though. The freeze proof faucet is designed to drain all the water out to well below the frost line so the pipe isn't in danger of freezing. This arrangement negates all that, and if the pipe freezes, it's really a pain to replace. We are going to put heat tape on the faucet and the hose to the tank to keep it from freezing, as well as a tank heater in the water.

I'm hoping the thick insulation means the heater hardly ever needs to come on.

Today was minus eight - so cold it just hurts to stand around. And tomorrow it's apparently going up to plus ten. :Q

It's about 60F here. I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

It was warm enough to go to work this morning without a coat. Well, now that I'm winter acclimated, that's kind of low. 55 F/ about 13C

But it's going to stay above freezing all week, so that's nice. :)

If this keeps up, we'll have a real winter this year. Something we can no longer take for granted.

We are not even having real fall. I used to need a warm coat around this time. Now, a light jacket is sufficient. And it's dry.

We might be having a real winter. We'll see. We had 6 inches of snow a couple of weeks ago, in a snowstorm that looked like a picture from a children's book, with big white dots of snow falling on a snow-covered landscape. It's mostly melted since then.

It's still been back and forth for us. I think we've had one snowfall, but it was very light. Today is sunny but cold—a nice solstice day.

We already had several inches of permanent snow, but we got about a foot dumped on us on Christmas Eve.

It was nice until today, and now we've got a few days of between minus 20 and minus 30. Not looking forward to it.

Nova Scotia had a huge storm on Christmas day. 11,000 households are still without power.

Yesterday morning it was -2F / -16.6C. Today it was only 13 F / -10.5C. It felt almost warm this morning. In comparison to yesterday, I mean.

The deep freeze has hit us, too.

Canadians, you can have your Arctic air back any time you like. ;)

Apparently it's actually from Siberia. So you can't blame Canada for this one :P
