Snow is pretty! :)

I think we're supposed to get ice, too. :( Ice is not so much fun.

I'm getting the same weather as Frelga. :D

The pundits are calling it a horrific storm. I'm calling it a typical Cali winter, from back in the 50s and 60s, when we had typical winters, before the droughts started in the 70s. And when I walked to school every day so I was well attuned to the weather.

We are having moderate amounts of rain and occasionally enough wind to ruin your umbrella. People who built on bluffs over rivers are finding out it was a poor choice, and people who live in river bottoms are also finding out it was a poor choice, but that happens every rainy year.

In between the rainstorms are glorious crisp cool days in which you can climb mountains (or hills) and see amazingly far. Which reminds me - I need to climb Mt. Diablo for the view and the ephemeral waterfalls.

To everyone not living in Paradise, my condolences.

Naturally there is nothing left this morning to show for all of yesterday's excitement...

If you like snow so much, you should move here :Wooper:

I'll take the snow, myself. We're supposed to get the sleet and ice this weekend, too.

laureanna, I remember, even in the 70s and 80s, people in California getting washed out by the Russian River, or having their houses swept down the hills after heavy rains. And long-time residents just shaking their heads at the the places they built or bought houses .

We have similar attitudes here. The first few times we had a warmish December/ Christmas, everyone talked about how odd and unseasonal it was. Then a lot of people moved into the area, and came to expect unusually warm winters. Now they're complaining about it being unusually cold, when it's just back to normal. What makes me roll my eyes is that, every year, the news crews seek out some clueless person who is trying to deal with a lot of snow with some sort of weird household item, because they don't have a snow shovel. Apparently just so they can point out how badly we were affected by the storm. They must search pretty hard - pretty much everyone seems to own a shovel, and most quietly get on with dealing with the snow.

Well...maybe not quite that much snow!

I'm too old to be excited about snow anymore, I just get amused at the mass panic the threat of a few flakes creates over here. I knew we wouldn't get that much here on the coast anyway!

inky, I think news reporters have to take a course in college entitled "How to Find the Dumbest/Craziest Person to Interview." :suspicious:

Also, in my area, they must also have a requirement about "Find a Local Link to the Big Story No Matter How Ridiculous It Is."

And, yes, give me snow over ice/freezing rain/sleet any day. I hope we don't actually get any ice tonight, though I have nowhere to go. We just still have a lot of carnage in the yard from the insane winds we had, so I don't want to add ice on top of it. I suspect our power would go out all too easily.

laureanna, I know you mean your condolences sincerely, so I will not trout you. :P

nienna, they freak out here about snow, too, though not quite so bad as in the South.

I also love when they interview some young person saying they don't remember it being this cold in their life. Because anyone over 25 would remember it being that cold all the time.

:LMAO: Yes, in your vast experience of 25 years (only maybe 10-15 of which you would have even been paying attention), you can't remember it ever being this cold/hot/windy/snowy/mixed up/rainy, etc.

We had a one-day warm spell where it went above freezing and a whole bunch of snow melted, and then it went right down to minus twenty again so all that melted snow turned to ice.

It's too bad I thought it would be too cold to bring my camera to the dog park because Willow met the cutest three-month-old German Shepherd puppy (distant cousin?) and they played adorably.

Was that followed by a slight thaw, just enough to cover ice with 1/8" of water for frictionless environment?

Ah, there's my California winter, when I need sunglasses while driving in the rain.

I'm glad I don't live in Fairbanks anymore. I'm especially glad this week.

https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/weather ... on-alaska/

It was more than 100 degrees warmer than that where I live now.

I saw those temps! :Q (I have a few friends who live in Alaska, one near Fairbanks and one near Anchorage.) Brrrr!

It's about 100 degrees warmer than that here today, too!

We are having such an odd rain today. The droplets are so tiny they feel like drizzle but they are coming down very thickly and soak through everything.

Is it cold?

It was about 60F here today. I didn't even know this, or I might have gone outside. We are supposed to get thunderstorms tonight. I'm kind of looking forward to that, as long as they're not too severe.

We had high 50s, low 60s. It was also not very windy. Some days, it's like a wind tunnel around my office.

It's weird that we had the same temps.

We did get some lightning and thunder last night! :D

Yeah, we don't get much of that. An occasional roll of thunder but nothing like a real thunderstorm. That was a memorable part of driving through Midwest - all that weather. The land is solid corn (So. Much. Corn. Even in the Salinas Valley, which grows most of American food that is not a grain, there's a variety. Here strawberries, there lettuce, over there artichokes*, then tomatoes. Corn Belt is literally all corn.) but the sky is amazing.

* Pretty much every American artichoke grows there.
