Poor Willow - she's panting heavily as if she had spent all morning playing chase and wrestling with her canine friends - and she hasn't even left the house yet.

She's nagging me to take her for a walk - I guess I'll take her for a short round-the-block one.

Hopefully she'll decide that's more than enough. It's too hot outside for doggies!

Did I ever tell you guys that I found out the story behind Poppy our community cat? Apparently, his name is actually Scratch. He belongs to a lady whose boyfriend/husband died. Scratch was more this guy's cat, and, after the guy died, Scratch decided he wanted to live outside. Another guy, Tom, has taken him in, though he also lets him wander around. So Scratch is not exactly a stray, which makes me happy, though he is looking pretty skinny and clearly had some kind of altercation with something—he's missing some fur on his side (no visible wounds, though). But he seems happy enough, and whenever he shows up (which is on the regular), he makes me happy. I give him kitty treats*, and he hangs out on my patio.

*I put out some water a couple of times. He's mostly uninterested. There is a creek and a pond in the complex, so I think he gets his fill from those sources. There's also plenty of shade and shelter, so he's doing okay for himself. Tom said he feeds him, but I don't know.

I love the idea of a community cat!

We got Martian skies today, because of wildfires. I hope we don't have a repeat of last year.

Well, Ireland is in the middle of a Heatwave. 30+ Degrees for the last two weeks. We're loving it. :)

There must be something different there - a different humidity level, or a breeze or something. I can't imagine anyone loving the weather we're currently having here.

I spent much of yesterday with an Australian, who shared my view of the weather.

There is. We get it about once every 40 years, so its a novelty!

We had a powerful thunderstorm that lowered the temperature by 5 degrees. But the forecast for the rest of the week remains unchanged. :( I thought thunderstorms were usually caused by the arrival of a cold front?

Or they're simply fueled by the high heat and humidity. That seems to be the variety of thunderstorms we're getting. We got a few strong ones yesterday. (This is what I hear. I was in the lab during them, didn't hear any thunder, but did smell the rain.) It lowered the temps by about 10 degrees or so for awhile. I think today is just a repeat of yesterday.

If I can sit in the shade and do nothing, I don't mind a bit of this weather, though.

So far, the heat wave has killed 33 people in southern Quebec. The good news is that apparently today is the last day, and it should go down to 22 tomorrow.

Not a moment too soon!

Yikes. :(

It's cooler today here, too. It's supposed to be about 81F/27C. It has been about 95F/35C.

It's perfectly lovely here, just about 80. It's also completely wrong for the season. Most years, I have to run the heater around July 4th.

It turned perfect here too, literally overnight.

Last week was wretched and gross.

The final tally was about 54 deaths from the heat province-wide. The Montreal morgue was so overcrowded they had to borrow space from a local funeral home.

California is on fire. Again.

Except for that one place that has flooding due to monsoon rains somehow.

Ideally you need a great big celestial wooden spoon and stir the whole state like some giant custard, and all of California's problems would be taken care of.

I was thinking more along the lines of airships floating through the overly rainy areas, soaking in the rain into tanks, then drifting majestically toward the draught stricken areas to release the moisture.

I don't see why that wouldn't work.

I wish it could. I hate all of the natural disasters (and manmade ones, too). :(

Toronto had an apocalyptic deluge yesterday. Cars and street cars were submerged. But what everyone's talking about is the two men that got trapped in an elevator in the basement when water poured through and they had to stand on the side railings to breathe - there was only about a foot of air left at the top and it was still filling up by the time they were rescued. One of them managed to punch a hole in the roof to get some space to call for help on his cell phone. Well done to the two cops who rescued them!

Details and scary pictures here
