July 1 is our "July 4th", if you follow me.

It's the official recognition of the founding of Canada as a separate country in 1867. The Dominion of Canada, as it was called then.

Flags, parades, pancake breakfasts, speeches by politicians, the local concert band, cadets marching with disabled rifles on their shoulders, that sort of thing?

Fireworks tonight.

And today was the day that the HST replaced the GST here in Ontario. The price of petrol jumped up 10 cents overnight. Good thing I filled up last night!

We had perfect weather, too: sunny and cool. I wish it would stay like this all year.

The Queen was in town and unveiled a life-sized statue of jazz great Oscar Peterson: link to picture

Right now neighbourhood families are setting off do-it-yourself fireworks in the park next to my house. Not Gandalf material by any means, but it was pretty cool!

I always suspected there was more to your guys' reputation for extreme politeness than just good manners! :suspicious:

If Canadians are Spocks, then I suppose Americans must be Kirks.

As far as stereotypes go, you know. :D (Which isn't very far in this case, because the whole theory is riddled with holes. But whatever. :P)

I heard that Canada is actually spelled wrong around most of the world. The correct spelling is "CND".

What happened is someone from the states asked a Canadian how it's spelled and he said "C eh? N eh? D eh?"
