As some of you may know, one of my majors is Anthropology. So, right now I'm talking a cultural anth class, and yes, I am going to ask for help with my homework.

Here's the deal.

The big final project is to do an ethnography. I thought it might be neat (read: I had no other ideas and am too shy to go into a group I know zilch about) to do mine on internet communities -- e.g. Board77 and its cohorts.

Basically, I need to interview people, do some participant observation (read: spam), and then write up an eight page paper on my findings. If anyone is interested in being interviewed (preferably over phone, but IM works, too), or just wants to comment, query, flame, etc, please go right ahead, via post, IM, email, PM, smoke signal, telegram, or carrier pigeon. I'll just be sitting here taking notes. :P

I feel a bit awkward about this, to be frank. I've known some of you for quite a while and some of you not at all and some of you I know but you don't know me because I lurk, and it seems just a bit odd and maybe even awkward to pop up after lurking like mad and saying "By the by, you're now my research project!" (It's not like that. Really!) So, yeah. I hope you all don't mind. After pondering it a bit, it seemed unfair not to let people know that I'm working on this, so here it is.

Thoughts?

Due date?
I would be fine with a phone call interview but a phone card for me right now is not in the cards.

Fine with me, too. IM might be easier, just because of any possible interruptions. But you can use the phone, too, if you want. Just PM me. I think you're on my YIM anyway.

I was thinking of doing this for one of my antho classes :D I'd be glad to help, but YIM would be better for now, and sooner would be better as well. I don't know how much internet I'll have after Saturday morning - I would have to call you after that probably.

You are wonderful. Seriously, this is a huge load off my mind.
(Except Borry.)

Thanks, Alatar. :)

Wilma, it's due on the 6th. I can always call you.

yov, that'd be great. Thanks so much!

Lali, IM is fine. Are you online and invisble? I never see you on.

Elsha, owls are fine, just make sure they come to my window while I'm here because my roommate always has the TV and probably wouldn't even notice and then the owl would be stuck outside.

Pips, I might. Let me poke around.

Estel, I wondered what you'd think. Thanks! IM is fine. Will you be around tomorrow evening?

Borry, well you're creepy, too. So, um . . . yeah!

LOL

I was just going to point out that maybe he was referring to his new avatar.

:P

Mossy, I'll volunteer too. You can tag me on YIM, though you do have my phone number too.

I'm always invisible, but I'll turn myself on just for you.

:Q

(Erm, you know what I mean.)

I was involved in such study before that was done by Janet Croft, who is Assistant Professor of the University of Oklahoma.

http://faculty-staff.ou.edu/C/Janet.B.C ... mvita.html

Her paper was titled "'Reading Lord of the Rings: The Final Attempt': an analysis of a web community." and was published in Mallorn (a publication of The Tolkien Society) issue 41 (July 2003), p26-33.

Her paper discussed the web community that grew up around a reading of LOTR by Debbie Ridpath Ohi (who some of you may know from the web comic Waiting for Frodo [which I provided minor help to her with], and from Urban Tapestry, a filk group that performed at the first Gathering in Toronto).

If you would want to contact me, you can PM me, and I would be willing to provide my phone number, if needed.

I think your evening is late night/early morning for me, so I'm not sure. I should be around now through the weekend though, and could definitely do it on Sunday, and probably do it sometime on Saturday. I'm free pretty much all day today, except for the few hours I have to leave the hotel whilst the cleaning people do the rooms.

Just send me a PM :)

Brian, thanks for the offer and the links. That sounds really interesting!

Thanks, cem!

Lali, thanks (I think). :LMAO:

Estel, will do.

yov, good to know. I had been thinking of it, but I guess I won't. Are you around on Sunday?

This is so exciting -- getting work done by talking with you fabulous people. It's fabulous.

Another volunteer, if you need one. I don't do IM, so I can im my mobile number to you, cause no one ever answers the house phone.
