I've cried a thousand oceans, and I would cry a thousand more if that's what it takes to sail you home.

Suuuuuuuure… the eagles can drop a doggie off at a shelter. But would they give us a ride into Mordor? Nooooooooooooooo.

CINCINNATI, OH (July 1, 2011) - It is with great sadness and despair that the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden announces the loss of its three-month-old giraffe, Zuri. Zoo veterinarians noticed Zuri’s fractured leg had become more unstable earlier this week, which prompted the medical procedure today. During the examination, vets determined that Zuri had done further damage to the fracture site. As a result of this damage, the fracture was not healing as expected and staff were unfortunately presented with the worst case scenario that the bone had become severely fragmented, ending any hope for recovery. The debilitating injury led Zoo staff, with the help of local equine specialists, to make the difficult decision to euthanize Zuri.

“In my 34 years of working with animals I have never felt such a tremendous blow,” said Thane Maynard, Executive Director of the Cincinnati Zoo. “In just three short months Zuri captured the heart of our community and was deeply loved by everyone at the Zoo. We are heartbroken.”

Zuri broke her leg on May 19 and over the last six weeks received the best care available as Zoo staff worked tirelessly, casting, examining and re-casting Zuri on three separate occasions.

“With the absence of hope for her long-term recovery, we had to make the difficult and painful decision to euthanize Zuri,” said Dave Oehler, Director of Animal Collections at the Cincinnati Zoo. “Decisions like that are made based on the animal’s quality of life. The undeniable pain this has caused our staff and community is a testament to the impact Zuri had on us all. She will not be forgotten.”

Zuri’s mother, Tessa and father, Kimba, remain together at Giraffe Ridge.

:( I know it's terribly hard to save a horse with a broken leg, I'm sure a giraffe would be much harder. That's so sad.

The little one from the previous page??! D: No! Oh gosh, that is such sad news. :( How did she break her leg? How were the parents acting about her limp or whatever? I wonder how they deal with trust issues and confusion when the giraffes notice their baby doesn't come back from the vet (assuming baby was euthanized in a sterile room as opposed to the animal exhibit with adults nearby). It's one thing when asshole suits at Sea World or something sell dolphins to make more money, but lowly caretakers at a zoo seem more interested in animal welfare, so it makes me think how they "explain" that one heh.

This is like when I was checking out the Vancouver Aquarium's beluga cam one day and read that their little baby had died of a congenital disorder. I think she was just over a year old and I had watched her play with her newborn aunt. It was heart-breaking. I was particularly not in a mood to hear about sad animal news that day, but even without that, I've always felt close to the vanaqua cuz there is still nothing like it in Canada. Captive marine mammals, sure. I mean there's Marineland, a few sea lions scattered around, and I think the West Edmonton Mall has dolphins, but that is it, and they are businesses first, rather than dedicated to genuine study and education. I get that you can't rescue wild cetaceans in the middle of Ontario, but even the way Vancouver runs itself as not-for-profit, I respect. If you're gonna keep the animals in tanks, give them the best care possible, don't build rollercoasters through their habitats, and try not to breed them like hamsters. Also it helps to work with the scientific community and sponsor conservation efforts or adoption programs.

I've yet to visit, but they are on the dream list. It's like there are the aquariums to visit cuz of size and variety, then the ones to support cuz they ~do the right thing~ heh. The one in Atlanta sounds great and high-tech, but apparently they've already lost a beluga or two and a bunch of whale sharks, so I am really disappointed. :( Unless those kind of statistics are consistent with other places, in which case I'm even more disappointed.

Anyway, farting on about my childhood. It is always more sad when you remember the individual animal. I used to write to zoos about their marine mammals as a kid (I liked the sound of their names), so while I'd have all the information, a few places stood out more either cuz they ~spoke to me~ or movies were filmed there. So I knew Finna and Bjossa the orcas from Vancouver, Keiko from Free Willy moving to Oregon then Norway, "Lolita" from the Miami Aquarium, Yaka and Vigga from Marine World Africa USA, Kandu, Nootka, Kiska and Canuck from Marineland... I learned how to pronounce "bayou" from a beluga's name, and "Ulysses" was a killer whale at Sea World Florida. :D My uncle was driving me to the Gathering of the Fellowship convention when the radio announced Keiko's death, and I keep the Time Magazine write-up on my wall.

I didn't keep up with those things as I got older and became obsessed with movies, but I've peeked at a few websites in recent years. Most things run by fans tackle the political side of it (captivity is evil), but sometimes I just want pretty pictures and to know the animals' names and personalities. :scared: After too long, I was able to visit my babies again last summer, so between that and the websites, I have a few more whales to keep tabs on and possibly get sad about some day heh. If you guys ever hear about Osiris the beluga at Marineland, she's a friend!

Yes, it was the little giraffe from the previous page. :( They aren't sure how she broke her leg. They came in one morning, and she was limping and had broken it. I wondered how the parents felt, too, when she never came back out to them. :( The staff really did try their hardest to save her, and I think they were genuinely devastated that they had to euthanize her.

Oh, I don't doubt that part. Just for the first time, I wondered how that aspect of animal-keeping worked. They try so hard to build bonds and get the animals to trust them, and there is so much going on behind the scenes. At least if you tackle one to get a skin sample and make sure they're healthy, it's for their own good and I'm sure the animal will realize nothing has happened to them. But the last time seeing your offspring is when these workers take it away from you or do something to it so it's not moving anymore... wonder how an animal interprets that. I will have to find out when Zoo Diaries airs and maybe they talk about something like it. :P

Sorry for the long edit in my last post, didn't think ~anyone was looking~.

Those poses creep me out tbh, but it's a super cute doggie!

I wanted a hot dog so bad in New York City, but due to creating new ecosystems with my sweat glands and generally not liking to touch my food, I held off. It won't be the same having one here, but I'll try all the same. :P
