My next wild-ass guess is Frodo facing Faramir. Or Faramir while talking to Frodo.

Maybe I should just look it up and stop embarassing myself. :P

Gandalf talking to king Theoden about Sauron, or talking to someone about Sauron while at Edoras?

Wasn't this Gandalf talking about Sauron, alluding to the madness of Denethor and the ensuing attempted murder of his son?

Is it Gandalf?
Is it Boromir?
Is it Gimli?
Is it Legolas?
Is it Aragorn?
Is it Frodo?
Is it Sam?
Is it Merry?
Is it Pippin?

I suggest we make it one guess per post or else I'm just gonna cut and past this post for every guess.

:halo:

They are Gandalf's words gazing on the body of the porter that Beregond has killed on his way to save Faramir.

I don't think it is enough just to say it was Gandalf or Pippin or whatever. Some close context should be given, more than just, say, Sam in Mordor.

'But it was not by design of your own that you became embroiled in them, and so I will not blame such part as you have played - a valiant one, I doubt not.'

That was Saruman, trying to deceive the company on the steps of Orthanc.

Phew. My first guess was Faramir to Frodo, about Boromir, but then I remembered that 1) Frodo didn't see Boromir die and 2) Faramir saw a vision. The I thought it was Denethor, again about Boromir, but Denethor had a palantir.

Enough of my jabbering. Here's the next entry.

"He should not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall."

I love that one.

Is it the Elrond versus Gimli wise and gloomy proverb contest? :D

Yes.

Be glad. My other choice was just plain old evil.

We'll work up to the harder ones ;)

'This is some device of his malice; some broil of fume from the Mountain of Fire that he sends to darken hearts and counsel.'

Beregond, to Pippin, about Sauron's nasty fume. Specific enough for you? ;):P

Okay, since I know I'm right, a new one:

"Happy folk are Hobbits to dwell near the shores of the sea!"

Would this be Legolas to Frodo when he first meets him. No wait! Legolas to Pip and Merry in Isengard when everyone else is at the council and Legolas, Gimli, Pip and Merry are sitting, eating, drinking and smoking.

No, Legolas didn't give a crap about the sea until he saw it at Umbar.

My guess is Legolas to the hobbits sometime after Pelenor Fields.
