I always wanted him to stay forever....

:bawl:

I'm going to have to find The Ten Commandments or Ben Hur and watch one of them this week.

Sad, I love Soylant Green and that last scene from Planet of the Apes.

He was a great actor, but his involvement with the NRA, and his politics in general, really tarnished his image in my mind.

RIP, Charlton. I'll never forget you for your greatest roles, most especially Ben Hur.

Did they get his gun?

Sorry, but someone had to say it!

All joking aside, I respected his work as an actor a lot.

I've been thinking that all day... they can finally get his gun.

As an actor, I have a lot of respect for him.

Im with Sunny on this one - the NRA leadership roles made me :rage:, but I adore Ben Hur and Ten Commandments. I just got the Ten Commandments on DVD recently... sigh

He's one of those guys I thought was going to somehow stick around forever... I didnt even know he had Alzheimer's... I guess he's been out of the public eye for a while cause of that.

Rest In Peace Charlton.

I was thinking the same.

Ben Hur was awesome.

I have a lot of respect for him as a man and as an actor.

But then I like shooting.

In either case (pro- or anti-gun), he did some great work.

:(

It sounds odd, but although I disagreed with much of his rhetoric in his role with the NRA, I respected the integrity he had as an actor, even in his declining years. Witness the small but bitterly ironic role he had in Tim Burton's version of POTA, where he shows Tim Roth's character a gun and reveals that humans used to use them to kill each other...which is why they fell into barbarism.

Being able to keep one's professional life and personal views separate like that isn't easy nowadays. Good for him.

My guess is that his gun is buried with him.

I know this will be unpopular on this site but I appreciated all he did for the NRA and the 2nd Amendment. The man had the passion and integrity to stand up for what he believed, without breaking the law. You have to respect that.

I respect that you respect him, I respect him myself. But the NRA has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment. They are very separate. The NRA may wave around the 2nd amendment to support their stance, but it was never intended to support the use they make of it.

That stance being that working for the NRA in DC is a really cushy job. At some point in time they turned into a perpetually sustaining lobby. If there were no gun laws in this country at all, they would find a way of turning that into a threat to "our freedom" to extract funds from their supporters. They're not the only group like this, and they exist on both sides of the political spectrum. Must be nice.

But back to Chuck Heston. I like some of his apocalyptic SF work better than his epic stuff. Soylent Green comes to mind...his scenes with Edgar G Robinson are pretty darn good.

I was just mailed Soylent Green on Friday after it being near the top of my Zip.ca list for years. Very odd timing. Especially if they suddenly decide to send me The Omega Man. :Q

He was never a favorite of mine, but what a neat bunch of films he did. It's like he made blockbusters before blockbusters were the norm.

I don't think there's a post here that didn't mention his importance as an actor. But there was more to him than that. It wasn't just the actor who died, but the person.

Given Heston's high profile in the pro-gun lobby, it would be kind of nonsensical to have a thread dedicated to his life that didn't discuss that part of it, as well as his contribution to films.

We can discuss the whole man, as we have been doing, or we can, I suppose, have a superficial discussion about certain films.

I would much prefer the former, as I like to see people as whole people, not just cardboard cut-outs.

ETA: Cross posted with Alatar.

Hal, why should we lock this one? The title is "Charlton Heston is gone." It would seem to be a thread for people to remember him in many ways and to discuss his life and all the aspects of it.

If you want to limit the discussion to just his movies and nothing else, change the title of the thread and make that clear in the opening post.

But that seems to me to be selling Heston a bit short, really.
