What's odd? Having to let them know I'm going? It's all got to be done properly.

I didn't give them my new address though. I don't really want them to know where I'm going and I already regret even mentioning it would be somewhere in England.

When I booked my flight at the travel agent's, they only asked for my name there. Then the agent looked at the screen and read out my address that she somehow managed to find through their database. :suspicious: I've never booked with them before so I wonder why it is legal to be able to get people's addresses just like that.

I got the date wrong. :doh1: I am leaving two days earlier, on the 24th! Good thing Mark noticed.

In most cases, at least in the US, your address is publicly available via the phone directory (the so-called "white pages), which is also readily available online. Some people have unlisted numbers and do not appear, but the vast majority are readily available. Unless things are done differently in Europe, I don't see why this would be strange. And even those that are not available this way are probably available by other means. Unless you ask for an unlisted number, it is assumed that your name and address will appear in the white pages.

For example, I went to http://www.whitepages.com (which is a site that aggregates this info from the various phone companies) and typed in my name, and my address came right up, including my old Ohio address where I have not lived for many years. This took all of 2 seconds.

I think that legal customs about moving are just different in the US than in Germany, Sil. :) In the US, I think there are very few reasons you would have to tell your city government when you are moving. You just move. If you'll be moving permanently to a new place and want to be able to vote there, you'd just register to vote in the new place, I think. And I guess you could tell your old county government that you're no longer voting there, but I'm not sure what the rules are about that. For mail, you just file a change-of-address form with the post office and they forward all of your mail to the new address for 30 days.

Congratulations on the upcoming move! I've been reading this thread, although not posting in it, and I'm so happy that you're finally able to get to Bath after waiting for so long. Be sure to post some pictures of your new city when you get there!

Actually, mail-forwarding is typically in effect for a year. My parents did this when they moved to the new condo.

Brian, thanks for the info. Come to think of it, we have something like the white pages online as well though I personally don't appear there at all. I assume they had some direct link to the council, but I don't like it. :suspicious:

Yeah, when I moved here from my last place there wasn't that much to do. It was a bit more annoying because I was moving to a different state, but not much. I just had to get a new driver's license, switch over my car stuff (well I didn't since that car was in my dad's name for it's-way-cheaper-if-it's-in-his-name reason), set up my new utilities and cancel the old ones, switch the address I have listed online, and tell the post office. They forwarded my mail here for a year.

A pain, but not too bad. :)

Maybe your parents have booked with that agency before?

A direct line to the registration office would cost far too much and it does take longer to get the adress from them. Every time my collegues at work ask for a new adress of someone who has moved without giving the bank notice, we are charged with 7 to 10 EUR. So I'm sure they must have gotten your adress from somewhere else.

Don't worry about giving "England" as general direction. Everyone who asks for your new adress from now on, will get the answer "unbekannt nach England verzogen". And as I said before in my PM, as there is no duty of registration there, no one should be encouraged to look further.

Yep, I only told the post office and my credit card and bank company that I was moving and transferred utilities when moving someplace new in the States.

I definitely didn't let any Texan or American authority know that I was moving to England. Didn't need to.

I realized that a while ago too, Silwen. I have always tried to keep only those needful things. I hate being a slave to possessions.

Even though I have realised how little I need, my bags are packed now and about to burst. :Q My suitcase is exactly 20 kg and no more than that is allowed. I can't fit anything in anymore though my lady shaver still needs to be squeezed in someplace. ;) My backpack is also full and weighs 7 kg because of all the signed books I put into it and four of my teddies who just have to come along. There are only a few little odds and ends that I must add the night before I go. I am not even taking my electric toothbrush with me though I love it (Mark has one so it's not too bad). The only thing I can do now is wait for the 24th adnd I wish it were already here!

Leaving tomorrow! I am really looking forward to it and hope this last day is going to be okay. I don't want anything stressful or annoying or anxious, please.

This past week I was thoroughly bored, busy reading, and unwell. :P If all goes well I won't feel sick when I fly because I have been nauseous lately. Might be nerves.

I wish you the best of luck! :D I only wish I were going. *sigh* Have some cookies at Ben's for me, won't you? And if you spot a short student with short, messy brown curls heading up the hill, you'll know there's a high chance you've just bumped into my girlfriend. :D
