So far I am enjoying not having much to do, especially because I can focus on my favourite time of the year. Image I do get a bit bored during the day and I am already getting into the habit of sleeping in too long. However, I have had enough time to get pretty much all Christmas presents including Secret Santas sorted out and wrapped. Only posting left to do and I have to write a few more cards nearer the time.

It's the first advent today and I spent it baking Vanillekipferl, biscuits with lots of vanilla, almonds and butter (an amazing amount of butter, actually Image ). I never made them before, but they are my favourite Christmas biscuits that my mother makes. Since I won't be in Germany for Christmas once again, I decided to give it a go myself. They turned out very well, though a bit different from my mother's.

They look awesome! Could you post the recipe?

By the way, the christmas baking makes an interesting contrast with your Hallowe'en avatar :D

Jude, I thought the same after posting. :LMAO:

Here's the recipe:

280 g flour
70 g sugar
100 g ground almonds
210 g soft butter
Icing sugar with mit vanilla (I just put the vanilla straight into the dough instead, but added the icing sugar after baking)

Combine flour, sugar, almonds and butter and knead till smooth. Form two snakes out of the dough and cool in the fridge for about 2 hours. Cut the snakes into 1cm-thick discs and form them into moon-shapes.

Bake at gas mark 2 - 3, 175 - 200 degrees C, 15-20 min (not very precise, I know; I baked mine for 16 min at 180 degrees C).

After baking, spread some icing sugar with the vanilla over the warm biscuits.

***

I have about 3 or 4 other recipes for these, all a bit different. :Q Some of them contain egg yolks, but I don't know anyone who makes them that way.

After great reluctance on my part and a lot of procrastinating we have finally booked our holiday in Germany for this spring. It will be the first time since my move that I will be back in the country and we are dividing the holiday into "family obligations" and the actual holiday in Thuringia where I have never been before. There will be lots of travelling involved which I am not looking forward to, particularly because we will have to carry around lots of heavy luggage. After all, I have to pick up as much of my belongings as possible.

Because we waited so long, we had to change some of our plans and it seems like I won't be able to go to the city where I studied, which means I won't be seeing friends there. We might just manage it as a day trip, but no more, and it will have to be spontaneous. Luckily, however, our procrastination means we actually got some cheaper deals to my surprise. The whole trip so far is cheaper than we had expected, which is always a good thing.

So now I am just hoping that if I get a job before April, it won't be a problem for me to go on holiday.

I hope it works out. And I hope the visit with your family will actually turn out to be somewhat pleasant. :)

Do you have your exact travel dates? I'm hoping to go to the UK sometime either late March or early April. I haven't decided whether to spend the whole week in Edinburgh or get a Britrail pass. If the latter, I was going to ask if you wanted to meet in London or Salisbury. Or I might even make it to Bath!

I will be away from 11-19 April. Sometime in March I will be in London as well, though for a craft show unless a potential job gets in the way.

You have to come to Bath, of course. :D

I'm reading about Sarum, so I'm very curious to see it for real. But maybe I can do both...

Do you or Mark drive, by any chance?

No, we don't drive so we rely on trains and buses. I've not been to Sarumbefore, but it looks very interesting.

Old Sarum is interesting. Combine it with trip to Stonehenge. :)

Best of luck on your trip, Sil. I know what it's like going home and trying to pack as many belongings as you can!

Ah sorry Jude, I never actually talked about it here.

Ik woon in Nederland, in Amsterdam voor vijf maanden. :P (I am living in the Netherlands, in Amsterdam for 5 months.) My marriage to Iavas came to an end back in September 2010, though not officially as England makes you be separated for two years before you can file for divorce. :x The marriage was absolute crap for years and really it should have never happened. :P But without it and all the hard times that came with it, I wouldn't be where I am now. I've found a much nicer and loving man, but I had to move countries to be with him (I ended up becoming a UK citizen and of course EU citizenship comes with that). I know it's a bit bad when I think about it, moving to yet another country to be with someone, but yeah... I could write an essay about that (as some people have seen multiple times on my Live Journal :P). A LOT of though was given to it, I've matured a lot and so far it's been wonderful. I'm actually in love this time which helps a lot. ;) And I'm actually loved back unconditionally. :) So yeah, lots of changes. :P

It's great to hear that things are going better for you, though!

(the cool thing is that I understood the Dutch you wrote because it looks like German. I wonder if I could communicate with people over there if they spoke really slowly?)
