Hm, dunno. My mom speaks pretty decent German and she says she could only understand a tiny bit of Dutch. My partner can understand German mostly, but can't speak it very well to them... same for Germans coming here it seems.

If you know English, German and French, Dutch is easy. ;) You can make up works based on Dutch grammar and mostly they will be right.

Eru, I see nothing wrong with moving countries for the person you love. :D (How could I say otherwise?) Is it correct that getting the UK citizenship is a rather costly affair? I have been put off by lots of German expats talking about it being a waste of money. For Germans it probably is a waste since we already have EU membership anyway, so there is no advantage other than being able to vote in all elections. (As a German, I can only vote in local elections.)

I booked my German holiday, everyone has been informed, but I won't be able to visit my student town. :( I was looking forward to it, actually. Hard to imagine I will be over there for more than a week and NOT have time for it!

What I'm finding the most difficult right now (I started taking courses on January 27) is the syntax. :/ It's gonna take so long to learn.

As for there being nothing wrong with moving countries for the person you love, well of course not. It's just that I've sorta done this twice. Well, it was Iavas who moved to the US where we spent 3 and 1/2 years and then we moved to the UK. I didn't at all intend to meet someone yet again from a different country, but that's how things worked out. I felt it was better to take another chance, especially as this time around I gave it a hell of a lot more thought, I was secure in myself and I've learned a lot about relationships. It was either turn down a chance at love and be miserable, alone in England or go after something I wanted. Sure it's not been that long, but it feels like the right choice. It already feels MUCH more stable than the other relationship, so I think that's a positive sign. :)

Pity you're not able to see all you wanted to see! :(

edit: oh and yeah getting citizenship is costly. For me as a non-EU person, I had to get a spousal visa which cost around £550 back in 2008, then after two years apply for permanent residency which I think cost around £700ish, then at the 3 year mark I was eligible for citizenship (3 years if you're married to a UK citizen, 5 years for everyone else) and that cost £960 I think. For me though, it was worth it to gain EU citizenship as well since that made moving to the Netherlands a cinch. Let's just hope Cameron and the Torries don't frak up EU stuffs for Brits and non-Brits alike. :bang:

I never got citizenship, but I did get permanent resident status. Shortly before moving back to Canada :D

I can't remember how much it cost, but it was a lot less than what you describe.

Some Germans who recently got citizenship mentioned it cost them at least £1500 in total. :Q If it were free, I'd take it.

The latest Radio Times had some of the citizenship test questions and I managed to just scrape by - and did better than Mark. ;)

Pretty sure you lose that permanent residency once you're away from the UK for long enough. :/

Sil, if a couple applies together, they get a discount. Maybe that's the £1500 you're hearing about? And yeah, the vast majority of Brits fail that test. It's a really stupid test I think. I've seen American mock citizenship tests and to me the questions are more valid. I mean, who needs to know what percentage of the population is x religion. It was a bunch of silly statistics I had to memorise.

Come to think of it, it might have been £2500 instead of £1500. I don't remember. Either way, it's way too much for me just being able to vote so I will leave it, at least in the near future.

Something that surprised me about the citizenship test was that the book you use to study it is the important thing - even though it does contain some incorrect answers. So even if you happen to know the real answer, you won't get points for it unless you give the answer from the book. :suspicious:

Right, I managed to change my holiday itinerary a bit so that it is much better now: more time with family, more time with Canamarth, less hassle and fewer hotel stays in places we don't want to be in. Phew! It bothered me all night till I got it sorted. Not long to go now!

Any chance of coming up to Edinburgh on the weekend of 17 - 18 March?

I would love to go to Edinburgh again, but I fear that is too far to travel at the moment. :( It would have been about the same time we were there last, am I right?

Right, I will be away till the 19th, leaving tomorrow morning. I probably won't be online during that time so I will see you all when I get back. :D

Have a great time! Bon voyage! (I'd say it in German, but I don't know how.)
