Not familiar with that book, but wow to it's geography and the cake!

I gotta try marzipan sometime. I watch tv shows about cake experts all the time and their crazy shapes are always made with marzipan. Makes me wonder if edibility is even related to deliciousness with these things. :uhoh:

Discworld is the setting for Terry Pratchett's long series of comedic fantasy novels, starting with "The Colour of Magic" . We are just getting started on the series as audiobooks, and really like it so far.

Are you reading the whole series in order? That's how I read them, but I don't know anyone else who read them that way.

Kind of. We randomly checked out the "Going Postal" audiobook from the library and loved it, and then checked out "Making Money" because it was the only other one they had- and it was even better. So then we started getting the series in order from audible.com. The first two weren't near as good as "Going Postal" or "Making Money", but the third one we are listening to now is great- "Equal Rites" We're loving that one! The readers so far are excellent, as well.

I have seldom seen anything as unappetizing-looking as that cake.

Cake is food and food ought to look like food. :x

On the other hand, what looks like food differs wildly from culture to culture.

Oh, I didn't have any problem with the appearance, aside from it being a work of art and I wouldn't have the heart to chop it up for snacks. And to be honest, it would give me flashbacks to Cannibal Ferox, which featured on-screen animal deaths and mutilations, including a poor turtle. Thank jeebus for the Human Society monitoring this shit nowadays. :rage:

I do, however, think the cake's theme is weird as hale for a wedding lol. The show Cake Bosses did one for a groom who was into cage wresting, but that setting is a little more recognizable, even if I'm less familiar with extreme sports than I am celestial reptilians (thanks for writing It while high, Stephen King). If I thought I was looking at a turtle platter, I would run away crying or something haha.

Well, to Discworld fans, the turtle with the elephants on its back and the Discworld on top of that is as recognizable as..... as.... well, Minas Tirith is to us. Or Helm's Deep. That isn't just a myth of the way that world is. It IS the way their world is. A giant turtle swimming through space with meteor pocks on it's shell, then the elephants, and then the discworld.

It's a really unique premise for a world, to say the least! Having lots of magic around helps, of course.

Yes, but people unfamiliar with LOTR could still recognize those buildings as, well, buildings. Some kind of structure that is medieval or fantastical, and at least in Minas Tirith's case, lends itself well to a cake makeover because of it's tiers. :D The Discworld one is like, 'oh, I'm eating a turtle and some Dumbos, okay...'

It's not the source that's obscure so much as the shapes themselves, or their combination, and for a wedding, to me seems a bit macabre when it's that life-like. ;)

I don't believe it is unique, actually. Wasn't it a Hindu belief that this world was flat and supported by four elephants? Then the turtle was someone else's belief. Putting them together is, I suppose, unique, but the flat thing on top is so obviously an (extremely well-crafted) earth, and the rest doesn't seem strange to me at all. I can't remember exactly whose legends they were, but among the many I've read, I know it's all in there somewhere.

Merci, Ara-d Zone!

I had to look up more GaGa cakes. I'm surprised there are so many (just cuz full-sized cakes are hard work), though it makes sense because I've seen lots of cookie and cupcake versions. Plus she usually looks edible anyway. :P
