Ber, thanks for offering to listen to the audio sample. The link is:

http://www.rocketlanguages.com/spanish/ ... ?hop=77650" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank

However, it's a very loooong page, so finding the track will take a bit of scrolling. You need to go past the advertising/welcome spiel, and then past the testimonials with photos and down to the text box which displays the software box (on the righthand side of the page).

There's some text:
Rocket Spanish is the ultimate Learn-to-Speak-Spanish Package...
....blah, blah, blah...
...Why not try a track now.Just click the button to start.

And then Track 1 of 31. Just press the play button and the audio should roll.

You will have to push past the female narrator with the American accent :P and the Spanish speaker begins. The whole track is about half an hour, but if you could just listen long enough to judge the accent, I'd be grateful.

Mind you, I'm tracking Alatar and the Rosetta Stone, so RocketSpanish is probably a no-go anyway.

Thank you!

It's American Spanish, Impy. :)

Am listening to it now and it doesn't sound bizarro to me so it must be American. :P

Seeing as I want to learn to speak bizarro Spanish, I guess it's the Rosetta Stone for me! :P

Thank you, both, Ber and yov, for helping out.

I hope you'll be available to answer stupid beginner-type questions as my learning begins!

Are you sure about that? On a purely practical level, there are far more American Spanish speakers in the world.

Yes, but in this Antipodean part of the world, there are fewer than in other parts of the world, so I'm free to follow my heart without having to think about relative numbers. If I make it to south america, I'll still be understood (even with my bizarro accent!) and, as I really want to go to Europe again first, I'm more likely to be testing out my learning in Spain.

Besides...I like the little lisp. ;)

Which brings up another thought: I was out with a friend yesterday (to the Leonard Cohen concert in melbourne! Was wonderful! But that's another story) who grew up in Chile and she basically said the same as yov - learn latin American Spanish. I said, I like the Castilian accent. She pshawed: What about the lisp? Dreadful! I said, I like the lisp! She said...but that's absurd, the lisp is only there because King Charles had a speech impediment and everyone copied his lisp because one didn't like to cast aspersions upon the king.

I mean...wtf? Seems like an unlikely explanation for a whole population to develop a particular pattern of pronunciation, especially as King Charles' reign was relatively short in linguistic terms and very few people would have actually heard him speak or spoken in his presence - and peasants would have been untouched by it, I would think.

And I don't know about Charles' speech impediment. It never came up in any history books I've read (or perhaps it was such a minor fact that I didn't retain it?)

But even if it were true...what matters where it came from? It's lovely! :D

I heard that story about the King Charles lisp too - I never believed it because - well, it's just so unbelievable.

So, Berhael - is it true?

It's not true. :LMAO: "King Charles" (i.e. the Emperor Charles V) was born in Flanders and spoke no Spanish when he arrived in Spain, and was very unpopular because of that. :D But he was very well educated, and a great patron of the arts, so he did make an effort to learn. :) His Habsburg underbite might have caused him to lisp, or it might have been an accent. But the Spanish would not have adopted it because of him, whatever the reason.

Proper Spanish may be in the minority worldwide but it's the correct version. After all, the country is called Spain and the language... Spanish. Not Argentinian or Mexican or what have you. :poke:

Besides, if you wanted to learn "American Spanish" because there are more speakers of that variety, which one would you choose? Bolivian, Argentinian, Dominican, Cuban, Argentinian, Chilean, Venezuelan, Mexican, Puerto Rican... etc etc? There is no such thing as "American Spanish" as one entity clearly differentiated from "Castilian Spanish", apart from the famous "lisp" (which is no such thing, simply the correct way to pronounce the phoneme /z/ ;) ). Chilean speakers mock Mexicans, and Cubans say they don't understand Uruguayans because they "speak funny". You know, not unlike Canadians, Australians, USians, South Africans, Kiwis... ;)

Australians are dreadfully difficult to understand because of our lisp...

I'm going to assume that the issue of Charles' lisp has been settled, no matter his underbite (I did remember that from history, but I don't recall ever reading anything about a speech impediment). :pout: I did argue the point with my friend but I had no facts to hand, you see. In fact, we still don't have any facts to hand...anybody here in the Imperial presence lately? Heard him speak? Don't be shy, put up your hand... :P

Anyway...I'm firmly of Ber's view that Spanish originated in Spain and the variants throughout Latin American are derivative and I'm going to stick with Castilian. Although, that varies regionally also... :suspicious:

I guess I'll end up with whatever Rosetta Stone Spanish offers me. If we ever meet, Ber, you will have to give me a Spanish intensive to correct my accent where I was misled!

Oh, but I have an awful English accent now, or so I'm told. :LMAO:

I would love to chat with you, though, in Spanish, English or whatever language we can come up with. :)

You're right about regional variation, although (to foreign ears) it's not as strong as with other languages. :)

yova, sí estoy (or should that be hago?), pero el programa (Rosetta Stone) es en mi PC portatil, y estoy usando un Mac ahora. La combinaciones de teclas son diferentes.

(okay, me enganó. Usé mi diccionario de espanol para algunas de esas palabras. Realmente, la mayor parte de las palabras. Tengo mucho que aprender!)

Jude, ¡gracias!....¡¡¡¡¡ :D Option/1 = ¡ en esta computadora.

I have to find all the other accents, too. And if you guys laugh at my grammar and sentence construction, I'll never speak Spanish with you again! :rage:

Actually, I'm practicing my pronounciation as well, by reading out these posts out loud! :D Debo practicar! Yo me pregunto como sueno?
