The other week we had some unusually gorgeous weather, so I took the five year old I work with to the playground. It had been cold and dreary for a long time, but finally some sunshine and warm temperatures. So, we get to the playground and I ask him what he wanted to play.

His response?
The Wii Fit!

My response?
:suspicious:
But we're... outside. :suspicious: :suspicious:

Yes indeed, he wanted to pretend to play the wii fit.
Ok, I guess we can try that. I timed him while he ran laps around the playground. Naturally he waved at the pretend mii characters as he pretended to pass them. When he tired of that, he practiced "hitting a baseball," "twirling a hula hoop," and some other wii fit games.

So, while we were outside he pretended to play a game that pretends to be outside.
:suspicious:

This is also a kid that watches approximately 30 minutes of television a day in the morning as he wakes up. I think he's seen a grand total of 5-6 movies, which isn't too bad, really. He's quite active and the wii is the only video game that he has ever played. They play the wii sports and the fit.

But still. This is all kinds of crazy to me. :P :blackeye:

Hmmm, before Wii, there WAS such a thing as real playing outside. Activity galore, imaginations run rampant. Dirt, dust, and an occasional bump or bruise. Real trees, real grass, real ponds and streams and rivers.

:D :LMAO:

I feel way too old. :P

Well I suppose that is better than playing a video game pretending to be a real person playing a video game.

Sounds awesome! How many characters can you play? What's the loot like? Does it have a good story? What are the penalties for death?

If you die do you get to return to a little tomb stone and ghost form of yourself? That would be handy.

Or like a news organization, pretending to be a real news organization pretending to broadcast real news in spite of the fact that real news organizations are also pretending to broadcast real news... or something like that.

Ah, outside... I remember that. Those were the days.

Now it's just somewhere I have to go between sleeping/eating, college and work...

:Q :damnfunny:

I must admit, however sad and disturbing that story is, it sounds like something that would be utterly hilarious to watch. If I ever have kids, I don't think I'll let them so much as set eyes on a game consul until they're six. Well, to the best of my ability. I remember climbing trees and running around in the woods making up stories and actually using my own imagination to have fun. There is a certain amount of imagination in what he's doing I suppose, but honestly...

20 years ago, when my kid was in preschool, the latest rage was Ghostbusters, so all the kids would run around the preschool reinacting whatever they'd seen on TV, using whatever educational material they could find to fashion into weapons and gadgets. I think it is just the way kids learn to assimilate new things.

True, laureanna. This little boy will run around playing Power Rangers, and he's never even seen the show! But all the other little kids play it so he joins in.
