If you love the autumn as much as I do, this is your chance to take and post pictures of the great colour that are on display this time of year. Or enjoy the pictures that others have posted...

As you can see, my camera and I were busy today.

And here's the pièce de résistance: I call this one "Strider and the hobbits upon Weathertop, as seen by the Nazgûl":

Lovely, Jude! I will!

I've been eyeing the old, white church across the street. I want to get a picture of it against the autumn colors behind it. It looks like it could be set in New England.

Taken from this vantage point, does this mean you're the Nazgul? ;)

Nice pictures, Jude. Your fall doesn't look like it's much farther along than ours. I read somewhere that the color change is mainly influenced by the decrease in daylight, with some influence of altitude (and not so much by cold temps). I wonder if that's right.

btw, I think I'll just enjoy and not post any this time. I lost my photo account a while back, when the Fotopic site disappeared. The rumor was that it might start up again, but at this point it looks like it won't. Yes, I know I could get an account elsewhere, but I liked their privacy policies and options, and I'm too lazy to look into other sites.

And hi to Deumeawyn :) - I take it that you're new here?
I haven't been around long, either, though I know many people from other boards.

If my 3 decades old knowledge is still correct, the color change in the leaves is due to the different kinds of chlorophyll in the leaves. The green is more cold sensitive, so it dies off first, leaving the yellow and red chlorophylls (which have a different name, I think?.... maybe xanthophyll?)

If you get a really sudden arctic blast, then all of them die off at once leaving a dead brown leaf. If you get slow cooling trend, then the greens die off leaving the others to make a color show.

Nothing's really changing color here, yet.

aninkling, you don't need a photobucket account - you can upload photos directly to our server. Don't use the "Quick Reply" screen at the bottom of a thread, use the "Post Reply" button beside the "New Topic" button - you'll see options for uploading photos directly.

I risked life and limb for these pics. ;) (I had to cross our busy road and walk on the farmer's property for a bit. I don't know him, so I don't know if he'd yell at me or not.) Anyway, this is the church across the street from us. I will add more autumn pics as I take them, but I wanted to get these today with the sunshine, the October blue sky, and the few leaves that have changed behind the church.

Thanks! (I made them a little smaller, since they were too huge to even really look at properly.)

Well, it's no fair asking me to ID Scottish berries, you know. :suspicious:

Thanks, Jude. That's convenient.
Then I might if I get anything decent. I'm still sorting out my DSLR. It's a very nice camera, but I was so used to my old familiar cameras that I'm having trouble adjusting. Took me forever to figure out how to get the thing to stop reverting to multi-point focusing.

What a nice old church, Lali. I love the blueness of the skies on some October days, too.

Jude, those red berries were haws from hawthorn trees. (Craetegus species) Though no one eats them nowadays, they can be made into a nice tasting fruit leather. My son's girlfriend gave us some commericial Chinese pastilles made from them.

Really? :Q I don't know if you've been following the cooking thread, but I've been looking for hawthorns here in Montreal. The ones in the picture are in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh.

Colinton Castle

Here's something you'd never find out about unless you actually lived there. Actually, if you're a native Edinburgher, you probably wouldn't care - it takes a curious Canadian living there to discover stuff like this...

Colinton Castle is unknown to most tourists. It's not maintained by the National Trust, and is not mentioned in any brochures. Destroyed by that idiot Oliver Cromwell and his goons in 1650, it was repaired the following year. Then, in the 18th century, it was partially demolished by the painter Alexander Nasmyth because he wanted a "picturesque ruin" on his property.

Back when I lived there, you could actually go into the ruin and climb the staircase up to the first floor. Or where the first floor used to be. :D

Since I lived there, the Castle has deteriorated further - in 2003 the south tower collapsed. As a result, the Castle is fenced off and theoretically inaccessible. My pictures from last week are all from outside. I photographed between the fence grating to make it look like the fence wasn't there.

I just popped some recipes for haws in the cookery thread. I misspelt Crataegus.

Those berries are Haws, on a Hawthorne tree. Also known as the May tree, the fruits as May apples. Near where I live there is a 2 mile stretch where many years ago the settlers planted white and pink Hawthornes all along the edge of the pastures on both sides of the road.

They make a nice syrup which can be used in place of Grenadine (pomegranate syrup).
