I noticed a mosquito bite on my hand a couple of days ago, and forgot about it... but now poison ivy blisters are swelling up in the same place. It's turning into one of the biggest, strangest looking blisters I've had from poison ivy ever. Who'd have thunk it?

Photo please. How can I make an authoritative, professional diagnosis without one?

It doesn't need diagnosing- I get poison ivy blisters all through the summer. It's just a weird reaction from both poison ivy and mosquito bite at the same time.

If you really want to see it, I can take a picture later on. :P

OK, it's not as interesting in a picture. I've never realized before just how much the roundness and gleam of a blister is due to stereo vision. The only camera we have here at work (besides the webcam on my laptop that I can't find the controls for) is a digital microscope. So this is an extremely closeup picture of a blister that is really only about 1 cm long.

I've long schooled myself not to scratch poison ivy, but I scratched the mosquito bite a couple of times. You can see the tears in the skin on the lower right hand quadrant.

I had a bad allergic reaction to a bug bite several weeks ago while on a business trip. It started to turn into an anaphylactic reaction, and I went to the emergency room and was stuck on prednizone for a couple of weeks. It worked to stop the anaphylaxis, but had its own nasty side effects.

Good luck with the poison ivy and bug bite. I know that stuff is not fun.

What kind of bug was it, Brian? Do you know?

No, Lalaith, I don't know.

I had gone for a bike ride that evening, and did about sixteen miles in a local park, so there were plenty of opportunities for insects to get at me, or it could have been a spider, who knows?

I dismissed the bite at first, and then when I started having symptoms, I thought it was something else--something I ate or something in the environment. It wasn't until later that I narrowed it down to the bite, because I basically ruled everything else out.

It was very disconcerting, and the weeks that followed were no fun, because they used prednizone to treat the reaction, and prednizone has serious side-effects of its own, but I am all over it now.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of prednisone either. :(
