We just downgraded Estel's computer from IE8 to IE7 - new tabs took a long time to fire up.

So what's best on a Windows (Vista) driven comp? Pros and cons please.

This is a Firefox crowd to be sure, so I know I will be in the minority.
I do like IE better than Firefox and I do like IE 8, even though it takes a bit more time.
It emulates many of the Firefox features and leaves out some of the more annoying Firefox traits.

Short of that, IE 7.

I went with Firefox. They seem to keep on top of things, and I find it easy to use. However, I am not on Vista, I am on XP professional.

I have to use IE7 for work, and previously IE6; I haven't tried IE8, though I've heard it is an improvement.

I tried Opera, and I found that there were a large number of common sites (like Yahoo) that had problems with it, even though it had some nice features, like Speed Dial, which was a fancy way of handling certain bookmarks or favorites.

I haven't tried Chrome on my own machine, but I've used it at my brother's. I don't really have a feeling one way or the other on it.

My only experience with Safari was on a Mac, and it had problems with certain websites.

Safari's awkward and I don't like it at all. I use it on a Mac.

On my laptop (with XP Pro) I use Firefox. I don't like IE much at all.

Firefox. The malware writers target IE.

I'm on firefox too, as is the entire music department in college. We had a big discussion during a postgrad seminar on Debussy about how much worse Vista is getting, and how one of the lecturers who sometimes uses IE had to go back to IE7 because IE 8 was "completely unbearable". Out of the four I've used, IE, Firefox, Safari and Vista, Firefox is by far the best.

As a fan of simple programs that do one thing and do it well, I voted Chrome. It loads itself fast, it loads pages fast and I like the uncluttered look of the interface. It's also very stable.
My only problem with it is that my online banking doesn't support it. So I still use IE for that.

For those who might care about such things  , it also has an "incognito mode" (or "porn mode", as some call it.) Any temp files or cookies collected while in incognito mode are automatically deleted when you close that browser session, along with any history entries. So you leave no incriminating feetprints behind.

I think I better get Chrome then, for when Steve uses my computer :P

I hated IE8 because I save a lot, and I mean a LOT of stuff to favorites. IE8 wouldn't remember which folder I was saving too, so I had to click and find the folder I wanted each and every time, even if I had saved something to it 3 or 4 times already. With IE7 it would remember the folder I had already used and just save straight to that.

Also, IE8 was slow in opening new tabs, and it always would open the new tab with suggestions. I'd much rather it open to a blank page. I did like the duplicate tab option, but frankly, I get the same effect when I click open new window, so I don't much care about not having that.

I only use IE cause I'm used to it, not because I have any affection for it.

My main requirements for an internet system is that it loads fast, remembers folders when I'm saving to favorites, and it opens new windows and/or tabs easily and quickly. Other than that, I'm not too bothered.

I think Firefox remembers folders.

I find IE sluggish so I use Firefox but I find a lot of stuff doesn't work in Firefox so I keep IE around for that.

I use Opera, I prefer it and like it very much, but like yov, I keep IE around for the websites that Opera can't handle.

I use IE8 - not found any problems with it yet, and I keep Firefox for backup.

Vista sux incredibly hard, so my new computer has XP. But I like IE, I tried Firefox and didn't like it. I suppose I have the newest version of IE. I don't go very many places, so IE suits me.

I don't get the Vista hate. I have it now and think it's fine.

Me too.

I dislike XP, though.

I agree with vison

I wish I could upgrade my computer back to XP. Vista sucks completely.

I haven't used Vista extensively or anything, but I have used it.
For the most part it is pretty similar to XP imo, but there are things I do and and things I am used to on XP that are annoying on Vista.
I know you can change settings and so forth, but it seems far too protective.
More people than not that use computers are fairly ignorant and it seems like Vista has too many annoying safeguards in place to look out for them.
For the love of Pete, why was it necessary to make the IE icon just a link instead of an active icon where you could delete cookies and things on Vista?

There are more, but I won't upgrade XP to Vista. I'll wait for the next nightmare to come along.

The slow rabs opening in IE8 is kind of lame, but there are features that I like. Enough so that it is less annoying to me than Firefox. Guess it is all a matter of finding what annoys you less.

I'm a big fan of Vista. I haven't had any problems with it and I find it better organized than XP. I've had it for about a year and a half now. I use Firefox on it and have never had any problems. I almost never have to use IE--just about everything works on Firefox now.
