So I'm currently in the middle of a long-standing argument with my girlfriend about Vista and XP. She seems to take it as a personal sleight against her computer when I say I can't stand the damn new system, and hey, maybe I am a bit of a stick-in-the-mud, since it took me until about 2003 to switch from Windows 98. But XP seems like the most annoying OS I've used since whatever it was they had on very old Macs. Also I kind of think that she values my opinion less because I'm not as much of a techie - technically. She has her degree in the IT sector now, but I'm still working for one in arts and humanities. D:
People kind of touched on this in the browser thread, and I thought the responses were pretty interesting. I kind of want somebody just to hold my hand and say "You are right" or "You are wrong". And there must be some good features. Other than 'it is new'.

Cons: Holds your hand
Reorders folders in the most irritating way
That damn sidebar
Blocks a lot of things
Hard for non-techies to use? Obliterated my old flatmate's desktop as far as I can see.

Pros: Faster?

I like Vista, I don't understand all the hate. It works great for me. I have fewer problems with it crashing than I did with XP. I did make sure to get a lot of RAM, though, because Vista uses a lot of memory.

Back when I was computer shopping I was running across articles dealing with upgrading to Windows 7 if you bought a computer with Vista recently...would you happen to know anything about that? It didn't make a lot of sense to me but I am wondering what the cost would be to upgrade...if I could get it cheaper now rather than later.

I resisted for a really long time...but finally caved in and now I will never go back. Just a better overall product than the PCs. Never thought I'd be so converted, but I am!

Of course, all the schools use Macs, so I was used to going back and forth anyway.

Only kidding Jewel, but just try playing "Lord of the Rings Online" on a Mac ;)

I'm not a gamer, so it doesn't make a difference to me.

Although the Macs are definitely better for art and musical compositions.

The long and short of it is that with Windows 7 about to be released, you might as well skip the Vista upgrade if you haven't done it yet (unless 7 turns out to be horrible).

FWIW, most of the Vista features netizens like to complain about can be tweaked or disabled with a minimum of effort. Indeed, with less effort than it takes to complain about them on the internet ;). But UAC was a train wreck; I think the public would have forgiven everything else had that been done right in the first place. I think the perfect Microsoft OS would be XP plus some, but not all, of Vista's new features. But you've got to take or leave the whole thing. Personally, I would go Linux if it wouldn't mean leaving most of my apps and games behind.

I have Linux on my little "mini" laptop (the EEEPC) and for basic applications it is perfect!

Dave, Win 7 is pretty much the ideal. Runs as well as XP on the same hardware, has the nice features of Vista without the crap ones. Granted, I've only been running the Release Candidate, but very impressed so far. My kids haven't managed to crash it yet, and that, my friend, is nothing short of a miracle!

Jewel, I ran Ubuntu for a long while and I'm as much a linux fanboy as anyone, but its still not a real alternative for a fully featured PC. Fine for netbooks and home users who want email and internet, but past that you need to really know what you're at.

As for Macs being better at art and music? Show me the Mac app and I'll show you a Windows app as good or better, and for less money. The difference is they're built in on Mac and built on frozen hardware. As a software developer once said "Walking on water is like coding, its easy, as long they're both frozen"

I'm looking forward to it. Here's my favorite entry from the feature list (bolding mine):

Users will also be able to disable many more Windows components than was possible in Windows Vista. New additions to this list of components include Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, Windows Search, and the Windows Gadget Platform.

I use both, depending on which computer I'm on, and I like them both just fine. I was afraid of Vista, but I guess I got a computer with it long enough after it had come out that they had fixed a lot of the bugs. ??

Vista won't let my husband use his cell phone as a modem, but XP does.
