I'm thinking of getting my husband a new TV for Christmas. A big screen TV, up to 60 inches. I know the following: I don't want a projection TV; I know Sony and Panasonic have the best pictures of any I've looked at; Samsung has good picture; Lord_M says not to buy an LG.

I have NO CLUE about any difference between LED and plasma, do not know if I can get HD here (I don't think our road has that kind of cable, but for all I know I'm talking crazy talk).

Any advice?

My advice.... don't buy one till Steve wakes up in the morning and posts in here - he'll have lots to say ;)

I'll tell you one thing though - I'm looking forward to when OLED TV's are affordable. They're so skinny and hide-able ;)

It depends on how your going to watch it, if you want deep blacks (best for movie watching) or if it's every day stuff, or how your room is set up, if your going to be sitting face on directly in front of the TV or if you will want to be able to see it from the side of the room. It also depends on how much money you want to spend and if you want really good picture clarity or just normal clarity. From experience I can say seeing the actors pores ain't all it's cracked up to be. In other words I liked Gandalf better without all the skin flaws. ;) but for watching planet earth..... :Q :Q amazing.

I have a panasonic plasma with the anti-glare, 50 inch screen. I choose it because of the deep blacks and picture quality, plus the picture didn't disappear like the projection screen pictures do on the sides. I could have gotten a bigger tv, but I choose quality over quanity on this purchase. I also have a Samsung 42 inch some one gave me, its a good tv too.

Ack. Have to leave for work in a minute. Will post later.

What's your budget? For large TVs that's normally a bigger criteria than most.

FYI - Direct TV, or Dish won't need a cable. For HD they are the best (cost is about the same as cable).

I don't know if you have already purchased your t.v., but go with a full HD, LED. Plasmas don't last as long. In the case of price, you can get nice sized t.v.s for decent prices. I bought a 37" Vizio HD for $800 two years ago. The prices have come down since then. There are a few out there that make it easy to connect your computer and computer related media (like SD cards) if you have any interest in creating such a connection.

Mine is a 65 inch Mitusbishi DLP High definition set. i love it. Films look terrific in 1080 as does hi-def broadcasting. The one drawback is that I have had to replace the main bulb twice although Mitsubishi did pay for both of those.

This is really such a personal thing and a matter of taste. For example, I could not care less about audio high quality. If I can hear it and there are no obvious defects its fine with me. For me its the picture that counts and this set gives me a great one. And, size does matter. I wanted something BBBBBIIIIIGGGGG!!!!! So I bought it. I look forward to the day when I can get 100 inch HD set.

Haven't bought it yet. Still shopping. I'm reading all this advice, actually printing it out to take with me.

You can buy one big mother of a TV for that money..... even in Canada. ;)

Check out COSTCO if there is one within two hours of you. They have a great warranty and their prices are among the best. It might even be worth it to join up if you can save enough just on the TV.

*snerk* :D

Careful that you don't accidentally walk out with $2,000 - $2,500 worth of books. :poke:

I bought a 37 inch Vizio HD LED TV from Sam's Club for under $600 less than a year ago and I love it. I personally wouldn't buy plasma for the reason TEDdy states, they don't last long and you can't play video games on them (I know that's probably a major concern for you :P ).

Happy hunting friend! :)
