A lot of people have interesting I-make-it-myself stories. I think this calls for a recipe thread.
(I can't remember what we buy in brand names, though like everyone here, we mostly use cheap stuff or make it ourselves.)

My second batch of yoghourt came out with the right texture. I wonder if that's because I used a freeze-dried starter this time instead of actual yoghourt?

The only time I've been disappointed with store brand is when I had Wal-Mart Steak Sauce compared to A-1.

But then, for some products I'm very brand loyal. I only use Charmin, never store brands, where it counts.
