Crossposted with Yahoo Answers - my partner is having strange problems and neither of us can think of much else to try.

Just recently my internet has been acting very strange. It's worked perfectly since I bought my computer a couple of years ago, but now a lot of things have started going wrong at once. When I try to log into some sites (such as Hotmail or sometimes even Yahoo! Answers) I appear to be redirected to another advertising page of a similar name, or a page like this: http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss28 ... 112341.jpg
I'm running Windows Vista with Mozila Firefox; I have avast! Antivirus, Spybot and Ad-Aware. I have run my virus and malware checkers and they couldn't reveal the problem. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox. A similar problem happens with Internet Explorer. What's going on? How can I get my internet working properly again?

I had something like this, except that it redirected google links.

Download Malwarebytes free version and run it. It is an excellent tool for removing viruses/root kits etc that other tools cannot, or do not find.

Hey, I was going to recommend that, but then thought that I probably didn't know what I was talking about. Cool!

One thing you might want to consider as well.

Some virus makers are aware of malwarebytes product (and others). If it does not work, it may be getting intercepted by the malware, especially if it is a root kit. One solution is to rename the mbam.exe file and run it under the new name.

This would only be necessary if the malwarebytes products does not initially work.

You may need to update the signature file after you initially download the product. There is an update feature.

Also, when you run the scan, make sure that you are disconnected from the internet.

You may have to run the scan multiple times, because root kits sometimes put hidden files that try to restore themselves. The one that I had did this. I actually had to edit the registry to get the last piece, because it was cleverly hidden even from malwarebytes, though obvious once you recognized it (I found info on it elsewhere online).

Do not consider it clean until you have at least two successive runs that come up with nothing. I learned this the hard way.

Let us know what you find.

Thank you so much - I'll pass that information on to her right away. :)

Well, she ran Malwarebytes, and it didn't pick up anything... but then the computer started working more or less normally again.

Maybe the malware just got scared when it saw she ran the program, and so they're in hiding now. But maybe running it every so often will keep them in hiding! ;)
