:LMAO:

See now it seems I came across as arguing for a certain unreasonable system...whereas what I was trying to say is that it is already in place: people always fight for what they believe in, and that's all. That those whose beliefs are backed by their religion are exactly the same in their fight as those whose beliefs are backed by...well, anything else. That everyone is trying to change the world according to what they think is best (like Maria said above) regardless of whether they are right or wrong. And we can hope we've chosen well and we're the ones who are right, but...I personally am not going to make that claim. Good grief but I have a way of muddling things up.

Anyway, it's Christmas Eve, a friendly priest has just arrived from Vienna with the Peace Light of Betlehem to light our candles with, I have to go get some extra tree lights and cat food, so...have a wonderful Christmas, guys, or if you don't celebrate Christmas, have a great Thursday and Friday.

Merry Christmas, Ro! I agree with you, btw. I just didn't have the time or energy to chime in (and wouldn't have had anything exciting to add anyway  ).

I don't think religion is really the issue. The problem is legislation that forbids people from doing things that don't hurt anybody. There's no reason such laws need to be religiously motivated, but in practice, they almost always are.

There's also another sense to the statement; namely that I will be polite with respect to your religious beliefs until you start using them to hurt me, at which point you're going to find out how I really feel. ;)

Aha I agree with that. Yeah, in practice, most of them are. I'm aware of that, but it should be irrelevant when we look at the law...it's either a fair law or it isn't. I find it strange to dismiss a politician because he's got a religious agenda and not another politician who has a non-religious agenda- they're both still agendas, and they are both likely to have serious flaws. "Don't bring your beliefs into politics" is something I've also heard said many times and it baffles me. What else can one bring?

And I agree with that also, but I'd even drop the word 'religious' because the sentence implies that only religious people are capable of beliefs that hurt others.

Or maybe I'm just annoyed with non-religious people (not here specifically, just a personal experience of mine) suggesting that following a religion, most often Christianity, precludes people from making rational or moral decisions. No, I am not a blind sheep. Yes, I think for myself. Yes, I believe in a God, and that does not make me stupid.

Being religious is a complicated thing, but Jesus doesn't eat half your brain when you subscribe.

The best analogy I've heard is that, to an outsider, a person's belief that his religion is the best in the world is much like his belief that his children are the smartest/cutest kids in the world. Most of us will indulge that sort of thing, but if you talk about it all the time or start insisting that your child be given the lead role in every play, etc., people start to get ticked off.

Dave--

And as with kids, the most persuasive arguments for religion I've heard come from people who start off with disclaimers about knowing about the flaws and loving anyway. Ultimately, subjective response is the only reason that can matter...objectively speaking. :D

And there are people who get defensive about other people's kids even when not bothered by them at all. But I'm not sure that analogy works here, because don't non-religious people believe the way they've figured out the world is probably the best, too? They'll try to place their ideas, their 'kids' in that lead role as well. We all try to find what we deem to be the best solutions, I don't think the world is divided into conceited believers and humble atheists.

Only in self-defense. :blackeye: Most of us are not Dawkinsian in our approach. There's a difference between offering your views in a forum designed for that (like here :D) and offering your views in general, without a request for them, to anyone within earshot.

I was talking about people trying to get laws passed, not about people preaching to passers-by.

holby posting with the wii and can't be bothered to log out Rebecca:

Thanks. Was taken at a nearby beach last August by Rebecca. We are lucky enough to be able to get to the beach after work and on weekends quite often.
and Rebecca can't pass up a sunset. Me either to be honest.

IIRC Rebecca said she can't pass up a sunset cocktail.
