Word "czars" at Lake Superior State University "unfriended" 15 words and phrases and declared them "shovel-ready" for inclusion on the university's 35th annual List of Words Banished from the Queen's English for Mis-use, Over-use and General Uselessness.

"The list this year is a 'teachable moment' conducted free of 'tweets,'" said a Word Banishment spokesman who was "chillaxin'" for the holidays. "'In these economic times', purging our language of 'toxic assets' is a 'stimulus' effort that's 'too big to fail.'"

Former LSSU Public Relations Director Bill Rabe and friends created "word banishment" in 1975 at a New Year's Eve party and released the first list on New Year's Day. Since then, LSSU has received tens of thousands of nominations for the list, which includes words and phrases from marketing, media, education, technology and more.

Well, some of those words don't bother me, but I do agree with many of them. I'm tired of hearing "czar" and "in these economic times." I've never heard "shovel-ready," but it's dumb and should die. "Chillaxin" is beyond stupid and needs to die a painful death.

But I don't mind "friend" as a verb. :D

I hear shovel ready all the freakin time. If you want Fed dollars for local projects the projects have to be shovel ready, i.e. not in planning stages but ready to construct. Should be construction ready.

Sure, languages change, but we can still complain about it. :D

I'm not a fan of the combined words either, like "bromance."

I think bromance is funny. :LMAO: And I've actually never heard "shovel ready" used before. But I do hate "in this economy" and "in these economic times" and all of those variations. The one I most hate is when people talk about "Wall Street vs. Main Street". Just quit it already! :rage:

"Bromance" is weird, but if we ban it I guess we would have to ban "brunch" as well ;)

The one I particularly find nauseating is this one
Quote:
TEACHABLE MOMENT

What might otherwise be known as 'a lesson.'

"It's a condescending substitute for 'opportunity to make a point,'"
Ughhh!!! :bang:

Sure combined words sometime get a bit over used, but then you could sound smart and say they are a portmanteau!! Bromance sounds silly as a a combination word, but as a portmanteau it can sound useful ( I would not go as far as refined though).

I will say I do not like the word tweet. Especially when people say "tweeted".

Words are funny things. The article recommends using the traditional "befriend" instead of the facebook-inspired "friend" as a verb. But on the other hand, a man "fathers" a child, but doesn't "befather" one.

We also have "mother" as a verb, but it doesn't mean the same thing as the female version of "father" - rather, it means to over-coddle someone.

And nobody would say that I "sonned" my parents when I was born. Well, nobody, until now, that is. Let's hope I was the last to use the term.

I've been chillaxin' quite a bit this week, what with the mercury down below freezing day and night. :D

I never heard "friend" used as a verb in any context other than Facebook. I don't really see why it's a big deal. I don't think I have ever heard anyone say that they "friended" someone in real life, just that they did it on Facebook. And it would be strange to say that you "befriended" someone on Facebook, you know?

Well, language is fluid and I don't personally see why people get all bent out of shape when words change. I mean, should we go back to Shakespearean English? Middle English? Old English? How pure do we have to get before no one understands each other anymore? ;)

I agree about "teachable moment" for sure, but Obamanomics is just fun to say. Also, it sounds like an overly peppy exercise program, like jazzercise.

We should go back to proto-Indo-European. Barring that, just ban all words. Viola, no more misunderstandings.

You see, if we all just used smilies there wouldn't be any more typos either ;)
