So I heard on the news today that the skies of northern Europe are darkened by the volcano in Iceland. All flights are grounded, including the UK.

What's it like for those of you that are there? Can you post pictures?

It's a beautiful clear and sunny day here, Jude, though a strong sea breeze:

Even so Gatwick has been hit by cancelled flights:
Quote:
The air traffic control service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace until 1800BST amid fears of engine damage.

The airspace restriction was the most significant in living memory, a spokesman said.

Nats suggested that the restrictions were unlikely to be lifted after 1800, saying it was "very unlikely that the situation over England will improve in the foreseeable future".

Passengers were advised to contact their carriers prior to travel.

Experts have warned that the tiny particles of rock, glass and sand contained in the ash cloud would be sufficient to jam aircraft engines.

But the Health Protection Agency said the ash did not pose a significant risk to public health because of its high altitude.

I see no ash here in Oslo, the sky is blue with a couple of white clouds, but all flights in Norway are cancelled. (My mum was very happy to be missing out on her boring business trip. :P) Our prime minister is stuck in New York City - I'm very glad I came home from my trip to New York and Washington DC two weeks ago, it would not have been fun to be stuck in this mess!

Poor Iceland. It's no fun to be making trouble for everyone else, even if you can't control your volcanoes. :P

Edit: I read that the ash and the whole situation might last for weeks. :scared:

Seemed cloudy and hazy here this morning, but I think that was just the weather as it's lovely and sunny outside right now!

Likewise. Sunny skies here, but flights cancelled in all Irish airports.

I went through three volcanic eruptions while living in Alaska. The first time, I had just packed up the kids and we were heading south for a weekend of camping in the woods. I stopped for gas an hour out, and heard the news, then had to race back towards town, watching the ominous cloud spread towards town from the opposite direction. We got home a half hour before the ash started to fall. If we'd been caught in it, it would have ruined the car engine, not to mention making a pretty awful camping experience. So we set out paper plates to catch some ash, and roasted our camping marshmallows over the kitchen stove.

The next morning I carefully took a walk and marveled at the affects of the ash. It had fallen about a half inch thick. It was so fine that insects left footprints.

There are some absolutely spectacular photos of the volcano here:

Hope this makes those of you being negatively affected by it feel a bit better. At least you don't have lava flowing by your doorstep! The worst-ever eruption in Iceland killed thousands of people. :(
Quote:
The worst was the 1783 eruption of the Laki volcano, which spewed a toxic cloud over Europe with devastating consequences. At least 9,000 people, a quarter of the population of Iceland, died, many from the famine caused by the eruption, and many more emigrated. The cloud may have killed more than 20,000 people in eastern England and an estimated 16,000 in France.

Now we can smell it here too. There are some dark clouds in the sky, but I have no idea if they contain ash or not.

Smoke rises in the West... The hour grows late and Sharkey rides to Oslo, seeking my counsel.

For that is why you have come, is it not… my young friend?

I would have invited you along for a walk in the garden, but it actually does stink out there. :P

Beautiful clear day in Dublin, but apparently the ash is mostly so ifne that it's invisible to the naked eye this far away. Causing some pretty beautiful solar effects though!

It does look kind of hazy - maybe just because I'm looking for it?

You should walk by the webcam and wave! :D

This is an economic disaster of huge proportions. I wonder what the long-term effect is going to be? I suspect a few airlines are going to go under.

And there is no reason to expect the volcano to stop any time soon.

All's clear in Finland. But hopefully my flight back to the States won't be delayed May 3.
