My friend's husband works for Squeezy - sorry - EasyJet, and he's been stood down until Wednesday...

Is the ash making the sunsets really cool? I know here when we had ash in the air we had some fairly amazing sunsets. of course we have ash in the air all during fire season.

Well my son and potential girlfriend came to Gibraltar on Monday and were supposed to leave on Friday. I've rebooked them for a flight tomorrow but that is looking more and more like a long shot. More likely they'll be here until Friday (everything is booked up until then).

If that's the case, we'll send them packing to Malaga where it's far more entertaining in terms of nightclubs and alcohol for 23 year old Northerners than Gib. You really can do the whole of Gib in one afternoon, and the evenings are dead.

It's snowing..?! It's April, and it's not anywhere near being cold, and yet it's snowing. I wonder if this too is the volcano's fault.

[wonders what this is going to do to the BF/GF relationship... ] ;)

Maybe the GF will be ready to swim the Mediterranean before the week is out? :help:

[OT] What does LFG stand for in WoW (re. your sig.)?

Oh, and speaking of games, I'm sure you've seen this classic here? http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=612 I laughed SO hard the first time I read it. It's well worth a reread now and then, if you need cheering up... :LMAO: [/OT]

It's been gloriously sunny most of the weekend here in central England, a bit hazy yesterday, but it was hard to believe that there was a huge ash cloud up there making it impossible for planes to fly. When we first heard the news we expected Hollywood-style, black roiling clouds. All we've got so far here is a fine sprinkling of dust on cars, like the accumulated effect of not washing your car in a 3-4 weeks, but nothing more dramatic.

Everybody knows someone who's been affected by this. In my case, my Spanish friend had her mum visiting for a week, but it looks like it's going to be at least a 2-week visit. Nothing to complain about, though - more Spanish homemade cooking and free babysitting. ;)

Funnily, Spain is one of the few European countries that is not covered by the ash cloud, so there are plans to fly stranded Britons to Spain and send a large boat to pick them up there. A relatively famous guy took three inflatable boats to Calais during the weekend and started ferrying stranded people across the Channel, but the French authorities were a bit unsure about this and told him he couldn't repeat the stunt.

I am so glad I'm not in the ash cloud area.

Ara-anna: I imagine there would be. Around the Black Saturday fires there were some amazing orange sunsets, but they just disturbed me. The light was much more coloured than usual during the day, too, and the smell of smoke was in the air for weeks. It was frightening, to be honest. Some of the fires were as close as Belgrave (about three-quarters of an hour away by car - sorry, I don't know the actual distance), and for the first time, it felt like it could easily sweep through the suburbs, and neither the city nor Baranduin could protect us.

Nienor, I think it's odd that it's not a heavy rain, but I guess the reason for more precipitation is that it has lots to condense onto. Hmm, it might be possible that the temperature has dropped as the heat has to filter through the ash cloud before it reaches you, but you'd know more of that.

Heeheehee... Thorarinn... I know a guy with that name, and it's not really one which comes up often, so please don't mind me while I snicker in the corner thinking of my girlfriend's mad coursemate. :D

Anyway, they were beautiful photos. :) Volcanoes are so dramatic!

Though I think my family would have probably rather avoided the drama... my dad's been stuck in America all week after he went to a stamp convention at the weekend, and my girlfriend's parents ended up in Cornwall instead of Rome, which isn't quite the same. My brother, who's quite hard-drinking and manly these days, updated his FB yesterday to say "stupid volcano... I want my daddy!"

He might be coming back today. :) I really wish my family would e-mail me from time to time. :x

I have to say the schools are struggling here, with so many staff not able to make it back for the start of term.

Nienor - incredible photos - thanks for sharing...can't you just imagine a Balrog rearing up in those close-ups of the eruption with all the broiling smoke and lightning... Ai!

Yeah, I haven't had much contact with the university since I've been back (my tutor's home address is only forty minutes drive from mine, so she wasn't in too much trouble) but my flatmate says that only five people made it to his seminar earlier this week. I wonder what tomorrows will be like? I mean, a lot of people skip it anyway, since it's at nine am and at the top of a needlessly large hill.

I saw these on HoF. Awesome pics! Thanks for linking to them here, Sharky. :)

Indeed, nienna, I can just imagine the Balrog flying out of there (with wings)!

What I have learnt from all of this, is that people travel so much. And these weeks haven't even been vacation weeks or anything. It's especially clear on Facebook, with so many frustrated status updates from people stuck somewhere or not getting somewhere or cancelling things - and that's just among my 300 or so friends. It's sad for them, of course, but I can't help but thinking that we really should fly a little less...

 Is that photoshopped? If not, it's probably one of the most amazing shots I've seen in my life!

I don't think it's photoshopped. The newspaper it's from stated that it was northern light over Iceland, and northern light can look pretty unreal.
