Who is a PHP expert (or reasonable facsimile thereof)?

On another board, where I've recently become an admin, the php is degrading, causing several critical errors per day. The masses are demanding us admins do something ... but while I can use the admin control panel for bans or password resets, I'm not nearly confident enough to mangle the php.

What's the error message?

Is it a phpbb board? Version 2?

About every ten minutes (sometimes more often) we get the message:

phpBB : Critical Error

Could not connect to the database


I'll get back with you on what version we're running, but it's now late at night here.

It could be something wrong with the database, rather than the code.

I'm not sure what you mean by "the php is degrading". php is just a language. As long as someone hasn't hacked into your files and changed things, or accidentally edited a file they weren't supposed to, the php code is exactly the same as when you installed it.

Alright. Like I said, I'm not php fluent. It could very well be the database.

So, should we backup the database or something?

It should already be backed up, but if you haven't requested a backup, then maybe not.
What may need to be done is to backup then re-install.
Does the server offer any support?

Alright. I'm trying to reach the site owner (he's actually rather absent and leaving it to his admins and mods to run the site for him) but I'll see about doing a backup and reinstall should he not get back to me.

You say you get the "could not connect to the database" error every ten minutes or so. Is it on the same page each time, or random?

If random, it could be that the server that hosts the database is faulty (due to be replaced?). It's your host's responsibility to fix that.

The outlet from the Phlogiston valve could be blocked.

Oh, that's possible, vison, but I really suspect it might be the trinipters. They tend to get into a cyclical degrade whenever the j-rads aren't uploaded frequently enough for the wex drive.

You two and your technology again - you might as well be making it up, for all the sense it makes to me.

It seems to blank out on us no matter where we go. It could be the main page, or accessing private messages, or going to the next page of a thread, or making a reply.

Hm, host. I'll have to check on that too then. I wish the owner wasn't so absent.

Find a new host. That's why b77 did.

Where is B77 hosted? The other one is a GoDaddy site.
