Did anyone else feel it?

Looks like no damage was done, but they yelled at us to get out of the building...

And supposedly it was felt as far south as Cleveland (hi Lali!)

I didn't feel anything here. :( But I knew you had one. A friend said he was on the phone with someone in Montreal when it struck (and the guy in Montreal was freaking out).

How big?

5.5 on the Richter scale - the biggest one I remember. We normally get tiny ones that you forget about immediately.

I heard there were some windows downtown that got broken, but couldn't see any signs of damage where I was.

Wasn't my fault, I'm not there until next month. :P

Just watching the news now! Can only imagine my own reaction; during thunder storms, I expect Morgoth to descend any minute. :uhoh: Will carry around a John 3:16 clown wig just in case.

People are saying they felt it in Cincinnati, which means, theoretically, I should have felt it here.

:pout: I did not.

I was sitting outside in the yard when it felt like a largish burrowing animal was trying to push up the old railway ties that make the pathway to the back deck. I was surprised by how long it went on for.

I ran downstairs to where my nephew and my friend's son were redoing the basement floor. "Did you feel the earth move?" I asked.

"No," they said.

Five minutes later, they reported one of my nephew's friends had text-messaged him about the earthquake. (HAH! I was right!)

Later, I got a call from my ex-room mate, Julie. Since Sundridge is closer to Ottawa and Quebec, she said pictures were rattling against the wall, and it sounded like an elephant was stomping through the house! :LMAO:

I spoke to one of my neighbours, who was downtown in an 11th-floor office building. Apparently it was much, much worse on the 11th floor than on the ground. :Q

My dad was on the 9th floor of a building in Montreal and said, "feh, I got a bad hip. Might run if it was an airplane, not a 15-second earthquake."

Sometimes I really love where I live because we don't get killer bees or poisonous snakes and no natural disasters besides the ten months of winter. But high speed internet makes that easier to get through in recent years.

I didn't feel it. :P

Having lived in California and Alaska all my life, I don't really notice 5.5's. :D

I live in the same conditions, except instead of ten months of winter we have ten months of summer. Other than that nothing much happens, except not much water, but meh no earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, mostly just a wild fire hundreds of miles away.

That is true, I forgot about my parents' praise for Arizona. Screw the fountain of youth, I'd travel across continents just to experience breathing air sans humidity! It's not too bad here, outside of the summer months, but the concept sounds beautiful. Florida gave me trouble, I noticed, when I wasn't in Steve & Jen's place. There's a reason saunas have time limits.

Apparently there was some real damage closer to the epicentre: CBC article

Some of the comments are amusing:
Quote:
BREAKING NEWS...........................

Earthquake triggers tsunami in G20 fake lake.
Quote:
I was downtown ottawa and it shook hard for about 5-10 seconds at most. You should have seen the people running out of the buildings and there were even a few people crying and stuff. I mean come on, half the city was still standing outside 2 hours after this "quake". people in California must be laughing their butts off at us right now.
Quote:
Parliament evacuated.... no change in productivity :)
Quote:
The shaking you felt was caused by Harper dropping palets(sic) of taxpayer money into the back of semi trailor trucks he is going to use to pay for the G20 summit.
Quote:
I was at work when the earthquake hit. We actually thought someone was moving heavy furniture above us.

Oh well, the earthquake did the smart thing by being fairly quiet. Anything more than that, and I would have personally kicked its ass.

Does Stephen Harper feel anything?

I thought it was Quebec separating from the rest of Canada.

:LMAO:

So your little earthquake may be responsible for messing up the radon testing in our new house. :( Either that, or the new house really does have high levels of radon. :( :(

I didn't feel anything. Though admittedly, I was far too engrossed in whatever world cup game I was watching to notice. When I went upstairs a bit later my cousin told be about it.

That's bad, isn't it? Will it stop you from completing the purchase?

I don't know. :(

They can fix it, apparently, but it looks like it's in the the $600-$3000 range. I don't know if Bill will be willing to pay that, and I don't know that we can, with all of the other expenses related to moving (closing costs, other repairs, bank stuff, etc.). I'm just trying to either forget it or pray about it if I do start worrying about it. So many things have fallen into place I am hopeful that this will also work out.

Well, $600 doesn't seem too bad (compared with all the other related expenses) but $3000 would be a bit of a shock.

Was it really caused by the earthquake?

Apparently, radon levels jump right before an earthquake. It's one method they use to predict them in California. (From a scientific standpoint, I'd say the shifting rocks cause more radon to be released. Just my educated guess.)

Other things that can cause discrepancies include major weather fronts, high winds, having windows and doors open, and messing around with the A/C or heat (which also happened in this case). The earthquake was just a freaky bonus! :suspicious:

Can't you get it tested again? They even sell home tests.
