What year did the first decade/century start on? Year 1?
So years 1-10 was decade #1, years 11-20 was decade #2 etc. etc.
The new milennia didn't start until 2001.
That's my story and I am sticking to it.

Read the last sentence in that paragraph. Even the author can't make up his or her mind :P

"The Noughty Ooze" - sounds like a great title for a book.

In fact, I think I just may use it for my next bestseller. Available where all fine books are sold.

And also in a few select places where trashy books are sold.
Only the finest and most tasteful, right?

I like "Noughty Ooze". Sort of captures the feel of the decade, really.

It really seems pretty clear to me, though I guess I shouldn't try to do too much more convincing. I don't think the author of the article was confused either, because the decade and the millennium are counted separately, as he/she explains in that sentence. The "eighties" were the years 1980-1989, the "nineties" were the years 1990-1999. Makes sense that the next decade is 2000-2009, doesn't it? Otherwise, one would have to argue that a) we have one decade of 11 years (2000-2010) and one decade of 9 years (2011-2019), or b) try to argue to people that 1990 was really a part of the eighties. I don't think one could get very far with either.

I think I'm spending far too much time on this.

If your thesis were to hold true then the first year would have had to be called year zero. It wasn't. It was year one, and that led to every other decade being "skewed" or rather assigned a numerical value that adhered to the numbering that we now are sort of forced to adhere to.

Colloquial terms like '80's etc have no meaning with regards to the absolute numerical structure.
We started at one and go through ten and there you have a decade. We didn't start at zero, (though maybe we should have), and go through nine.

It all went wrong at year one, and that has messed us up for millenniums.

Well, what I'm saying is that the colloquial definition of a "decade" is different from the determination of the millennium. Both, of course, are arbitrarily defined, but they are arbitrarily defined in distinct ways. This is why we can have a decade that incorporates two different millennia. The second millennium ended on December 31st, 2000, but the "nineties" ended on December 31st, 1999. Thus, the new decade as generally defined began before the second millennium ended. The years from 2001-2010 were certainly a decade, being ten years in magnitude. However, if you were to define the "aughts" as the years 2001-2010, you would not only have to deal with where to place the year 2000, but you would also have to exclude 2020 from the "new twenties" and place it in the "new tens", exclude 2030 form the "new thirties" and place it in the "new twenties", etc. As we define a decade, this wouldn't make any sense.

Maybe we should just switch to the Mayan calendar. :nono:

Then it is your opinion that the first decade had only 9 years?

No, but that's because colloquially, we don't talk about the first decade as anything. We talk about the nineties as a period of time, or the seventies, or even maybe the 1860s. But before that, it becomes too cumbersome to refer to decades as cultural eras, because they are too short. We only do this with recent history.

Soooo how's everybody enjoying the decade so far?

Look! Our little millennium is now an adolescent! I remember when it was still in diapers.
