I posted this on FB, too. Does anyone here read Hungarian? I found a paper clipping in my grandma's prayer book. It looks like her dad's obituary, if I'm guessing correctly. I thought I'd try my friends first before attempting an online translator or something. I'll scan it in and post it here if anyone feels adventurous!

Babelfish doesn't do Hungarian, but I found this:

http://translation.babylon.com/hungarian/to-english/

I typed in the first sentence and got:
Quote:
Tudatjlk sorrowful heart, to the best wife, mother and grandmother, the Pest County, born in Dusnoki
so you're right, it does look like an obituary.

Hmmm...looks like you have relatives in Canada, Lali! I'm assuming Fia means son and Fivere is daughter. So, it seems there was a daughter, Janos Bolvary who moved to Canada. (French for son is fil, and daughter is fille.)

I do have "the Canadian cousins," as I learned at our last family reunion. :) I'm not sure how they're related exactly. They live near St. Katherine's, I think. (Or is it St. Catherine's? It's near Toronto.)

Bolvary is my great-grandmother's maiden name. Hodovan is my great-grandfather's last name.

Mariska, in there, is my grandmother, Mary, married to "Lindner Janosne," or John Lindner.

I wish I could help you! That's such a cool find though. :thumbsup

laureanna sent it to a friend of hers who is Hungarian, and I'm hoping that person will have time to translate it for me.

Did you know that Hungarian is not an Indo-European language but a Finno-Urgic one?

I did, thanks to LordM on HoF. :D (Someone mentioned that it was closer to Finnish than anything else, and LordM came in and explained why, of course.)

I think that's quite cool. Being part Asian isn't something I typically think about, though I have roots through the Hungarian on my Dad's said and the Native American on my Mom's side. Isn't amazing how we're all really connected?
