Good question! (And nice pics! Your day looks gloomy like ours.)

Wiki answers your question:

It has colorful, orange fruits that are the size of a pea. These fruits are poisonous to humans when ingested internally, but are favorites of birds. C. scandens roots were used by Native Americans and pioneers to induce vomiting, to treat venereal disease, and to treat symptoms of tuberculosis.

C. scandens is native to central and eastern North America. It was given the name Bittersweet by European colonists in the 18th century because the fruits resembled the appearance of the fruits of Eurasian Nightshade (Solanum dulcamara), which was also called Bittersweet. Today, American Bittersweet is the accepted common name of C. scandens in large part to distinguish it from an invasive relative, C. orbiculatus (Oriental Bittersweet), from Asia.

Indeed. :D

There are other options, too.

Here's Licorice enjoying the sights of autumn today:

We had some spectacular colours this year, but most of it is on the ground now due to some fairly violent winds.

Awww. The last picture looks like it's in a pine forest, though.

(I love pine forests. Love those slippery, soft needles under your feet, the smell, the quiet hush....)

Oh, that 2nd pic is really great. :) :)

(The high here for the past week or so has been ~90F, crazy even for Florida, so this "autumn" you speak of remains foreign down here. :P)

It took a bit of staring to discover that you didn't write "-90F".

Hence my dropped jaw.

Of course she does! It's a fun time of year, as long as you don't think about the coming winter. :P

It's officially Autumn now! In honour of this, I'm reposting my two all-time favourite pictures of Anna:

She was a gorgeous dog. I have to say, while your other dogs are splendid, too, she is my favorite. She's just my favorite kind of dog.

It is fall here, for sure. I smelled it today. :D

The locust tree outside my front door is shedding tiny, golden leaves everywhere (including carpeting my car  ), and the sugar maples are turning red. Now that the heat broke, I'm going for a walk tonight for sure.

I agree with you. I think Anna must have spoiled me for all future dogs. I love Willow and Bud, but Anna was in a class all of her own.

The leaves here are just starting to turn colour. Hopefully I'll be able to post some spectacular pictures soon.

People! What's autumn like in your part of the world? Show us! :poke:

Pretty much the same as every other part of the dry season. Which is most of the year, now.

Impressive, Jude!

Lali, how long does the fall color last in your neck of the woods? I don't remember seeing much of it when we were in Chicago last September.

We're getting into peak color now, if I could manage to get out there and do any looking. For one thing, it's back to 90F. For another, work.
