Hi all,

Long time no see. Glad to see many in the community are around and enjoying each other's company.

I'm overseeing a multi-disciplinary research study with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Philosophy and Social Psychology departments, and I need participants from the United States. The study is in two parts, with a survey and interview component. We're looking at perception and memory amongst people with varying religious backgrounds and viewpoints. Those who complete the initial survey may be contacted for a follow-up interview. The survey takes 5-10 minutes (less if you're a fast reader, which I imagine most if not all of you are), and for those selected the interview will last from 5 minutes to an hour depending upon how much you wish to contribute. The survey can be found here:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/K5CMQ3K

I can't provide much more detail about the study right now, as doing so might bias your answers, but I'll certainly be happy to post the results upon the study's completion. That said, feel free to leave comments/questions in this thread, via PM, or email me at matthew-durham@utc.edu.

Regards,

Matthew

Hey Wolfie!!!1111

You mentioned participants "from the United States", although the survey itself doesn't say so. Does that mean you don't need input from Canadians?

There's not a whole lot of traffic here this summer, you might try over at HOF http://thehalloffire.net/forum/

I did the survey last week. *smug*

I think I got some answers wrong, though. :Q  ;)

Hi Jude!

I would love input from anyone everywhere, but at this point I only have approval from my Institutional Review Board to elicit participation from people in the United States. (That may change in the future)

MariaHobbit,

Thank you again! No answers to the survey are "wrong" per se, but some of the questions will be problematic for folks of certain views and backgrounds (myself included). This was by design, though I can't say the reason at this point.

Regards,

Matthew

I meant wrong as in I answered differently when the questions shifted slightly:

Do you like dogs? Yes.

Do you like purple dogs? Undecided

Do you like bad dogs? No.

Do you like puppies? Yes!

Not that any of the questions were about dogs, of course... but I felt bad about giving inconsistent answers.

Hey, Wolfie!

I had a hard time with one or two of the questions there at the end... sometimes you need a bit more grey shading than "always" and "never". :) However, I did my best.

Hope it helps!

I also tried to fill it in (Irish, not US, so feel free to ignore)

I found it very repetitive. I'm sure there are tiny variations in the questions but I found myself thinking "Stop asking me the same bloody question in a different way."

Thank you both! I won't be able to use data from those who identify themselves as not in the US, but like I said that may change in the future. Also, I share your frustration wtih the repetitiveness. There is a reason for it, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating.

Well, the repetitive questions did make me pay more attention. :) Lots of double negatives in there... it would have been easy to answer things inconsistently, simply because one wasn't paying close enough attention.

I filled it in (also Irish, not US, so also feel free to ignore), but my answers were somewhat complicated because I'm a professional churchgoer who usually doesn't believe in God...

I started, but it appears to be directed specifically at Christians, since it asks about church?

I had a look too, but it was impossible to finish because the last question gave a choice of two answers, both of which were false for me.

I did feel like it was being deliberately tricksy; hopefully the intent of that is not to try to prove that people of faith are inconsistent in their logic. If so, then by making the language especially abstruse, I think it's a devious way to do it.

My two cents.

Lalaith,

I assure you that's not at all the purpose of this survey. (And from our past discussions, I doubt you would take issue with the underlying research question I'm looking to explore.) The survey is more of a pre-screening tool to help me identify participants that fall into a variety of different categories. Once I've analyzed the survey data, I'll be randomly selecting participants for the interview portion of the study.

Jude,

I appreciate your making the attempt. That last question is understandably problematic for people who don't go to church. This survey is part of a pilot study, and I'm looking for a way to get around this particular roadblock when I do the main study.

Frelga,

The survey terms are somewhat biased, yes. That is intentional. Thank you for trying, though!

Crucifer,

Thank you!

All right, Wolfie. That's cool. :)

Good luck on the research, btw. It sounds fascinating, and I'll be looking forward to the results when you're able to share them.

Well, if. the intent was to study a particular group, it's certainly reasonable. I just wish it was made clear before I went through the first 30 questions.

Frelga,

Understood, and thanks for the constructive criticism.
